I read the article on the club site and it looks a bit foolish to me. The concept is sound, its been used as an umbrella rig in saltwater and living near the ocean I never stop hearing about everyone using them so successfully for tuna. However it seems pretty impractical for casting because you would need a pretty heavy rod and line and even then it may be difficult to be able to throw the thing a good distance. Not to mention if you don't check your state regs before using it it could be an absolute nightmare. I'm gonna stick to my one bait per line method for now. |

The "New Alabama Rig" is nothing new at all...We've been using that rig for years in saltwater, trolling for stripedbass, bluefish and pelagic spieces such as tuna and albacore. It's called an umbrella rig. I mainly fish inshore so we troll umbrella rigs with 9 in shad bodies white or chartruese. There very good in the spring time and will catch a bunch of fish. I get a kick out of how these Bass guys come up with these flashy names for rigs, like they created something new. Just like the "drop-shot" rig. Thats nothing new...Saltwater fisherman been using that rig for years and years...It's a dropper loop rig. Used for bottom fishing. |

That's true Barresi, there's nothing new here...except the name. Anything you can market to BASS fishermen is big money though...so you need to dig down into your saltwater "bag of tricks" and introduce the next big thing! Who knows, you might make millions.

Did anyone else go to that link Bassman posted? They want 25 bucks for that thing and its 5 weeks backordered. Hey Barresi, how much are you payin' for umbrella rigs? |

They average in price...you can get basic un-rigged umbrellas for a couple bucks...or spend the extra money and have them already rigged....20-25 dollars is about right, thats includiing 8 rigged shad bodies with a trailer lure, usually a parachute rig. |

yeah 25$ is a bit up there. being from Michigan i never knew about the unbrella rig and the drop shop being saltwater tactics. haha there you go mo im going to have to go and look up some other saltwater set ups and come up with the "NEW" breakthrough bass technique. |

I know what you mean Bassman about not knowing these were saltwater techniques...my dad and grandfather used drop-shot rigs on the Ohio river 50 years ago. Who knows how old that one is, the Indians might have used it! A true breakthrough would be for someone to come out with an Alabama rig for 5 bucks. I don't think that would be so hard, five wires/w/snaps on a sinker? |

Here's an idea...which I kinda thought I'd might try on a boring winter day...Try using the wire from coat/clothing hangers...try to use the thick wire. |

yeah good call ill be checking that out. i thought about using a coat hanger but i dident know if it would be to heavy. i think that is still going to be something that i mess around with this winter. i was almost woundering about if i took a spinner bait and took the blade off and put a jig on there if that would get any hits. |

Something I want to try to make is a saltwater version spinnerbait. I think it might work on Stripers, Blues and Weakfish...who knows??? It would have to be big enough to get there attention and heavy enough to get down to 30-50 ft of water and with stand strong current. I don't know of any saltwater spinnerbaits for the purpose I just described. I know Bomber and a couple other compaines make small spinners for Redfish, but I'm thinking BIG...For big Blues and Stripers... |

Hey Barresi, you should checkout some MUSKY inline spinners and spinnerbaits. I would think they would be just what you're lookin' for. Would they hold up to saltwater though? |

Funny you say musky inline spinners and spinnerbaits. I remember a year or two ago watching Hunt for big fish with Larry Dalhberg. He was casting huge spinners for musky. I'll have to look into it. As far as the salt...as long as you wash it down after each use, it should be go to go. Janns makes some good stuff to make your own tackle, I've used them before, I'm gonna try to make my own, something in the 3-5 ounce range and as big as a bunker spoon. I'll keep you guys posted. |

Yep, I have seen Larry catching big stripers on his musky tackle, but that was on the surface....might want to check into that also. |

Anybody seen the latest to unfold in the Alabama rig saga? It's the Yum "Yumbrella rig"...appears to be a little more affordable than the official Alabama rig. Go to http://lurenet.com/internet-specials/yumbrellarigs P.S. Bassman, How did you get your link to be "hot"? If I remember right, mine used to do that also...what's up? |

There is a fellow in Arizona who has designed one to be Arizona legal, basically only two lures and then some no hook attractors. |

The best advice is to check with the DNR for the State you'll be fishing in. Some States limit the number of hooks you can have while others may have special rules depending on the body of water you'll be fishing. The rigs can be costly so better to check before you drop a lot on ca$h and can't use them. |

Has anyone tried trolling an umbrella rig for walleye ? Or should I just check my state regs and try it myself ? |
