I am going to be halibut fishing in Oregon this summer and was wondering if anyone has a suggestion as to the best braid to use? I will probably be fishing 200 - 300 ft. down and wanted to get smaller diameter to use less weight as I drift.

The brand is a matter of personal preference, most are about the same in performance to me. I would check with someone who has done some Halibut fishing as to what test would be best. Maybe a post in the Oregon section?

I don' think it would matter as to what is the best braid to use, that's personal preference. If your fishing 200-300 ft, I would use mono. At that depth, It isn't going to matter.

I was planning on using braid with a smaller diameter than mono in order to use less weight to keep the line on the bottom.

I understand that the diameter is less than mono, but you stated your going to be fishing 200-300 ft depths. Braid or mono, your still going to need a lot of weight to keep your bait down on the bottom. At that depth and depending on current, you might be using up to 42 oz of lead. You will also need at least 400 Yds of braid, which is going to be more expensive, in the 80lb class. If you do decide to go with braid, I prefer power pro braid.

Fitting 400 yds of80# mono on some reels can be and issue, now we are faced with the question " What is cheaper, mono and a bigger reel, or braid on my existing reel?" Braid might actually be more cost effective than the purchase of a monster reel with the capacity to hold that much mono, not to mention the fatigue factor brought on by the sheer size of that reel and it's attendant weight.

I will probably end up going with Power Pro braid.  It does cost more than mono, but it will work out better in the long run.
    Thanks.
