When im fishing in wisconsin for walleyes and crappies during the summer, i fish backwards where i fish for walleyes in the morning and crappies in the evening. This always has a tendency to work for me. Does this work for you?

I find that both species are more active during low light conditions like a cloudy day or at night. My best walleye fishing has been on partly cloudy nights around the full moon. Tom

I use a submersible green light at night when fishing for crappie and stripers, turn off the light for catfish. That light really draws in the bait, crappie and stripers follow.

Summertime. I generally fish for walleyes in the early morning because the spot just seems like the walleye's don't like fishing pressure. The crappies are different, they like the surface activity that the river shiners are in the evening and come closer to shore.

Here in NC I have always had better luck fishing crappie at night. I don't know if it's because they're more active at night or that I can't get the daytime jig color combination right. I'm happy as long as I catch them.

I read in Bill Dance's 101 Tips for Freshwater Fishing that a light draws insects which draw in baitfish to feed on the insects and the crappie feed on the baitfish. Also, I use an Arbogast Jitterbug at night for giant crappie. The popping sound and rattle really draw 'em in.

A white light in the boat will certainly attract insects. Personally, I don't want to attract insects.
The light I use is a submersible green light. It attracts plankton, which attracts shad, which attract stripers and crappie.

If you fish walleye, over time you get to know what some call a "walleye chop" went the waves are the right size to just lift bait fish off the reefs and it great walleye fishing. I would bet it would also be good for slabs.

The big plus to the walleye chop is that it breaks up the strong light on a sunny day. Walleye are very light sensative which is why cloudy days and night time are prime time for catching them. Tom
