The best tip I can pass on for catching trophy sized fish is to fish water that holds them. Crappie tend to be cyclical in nature, a given lake will have a couple of good years followed by some poor years. Up to date info on the lake you plan on fishing is vital as lakes only a few miles apart can be very different. Tom

duncan, tom is right about lakes that are close to each other and be so different about the size of fish that are in them. also that color combo seems to be the best 1 for me. but sometimes a black jig head with yellow or organ curly tail works great.

also don't forget to try the straight paddle tails.

I've actually tried the combo the man told me about and caught 4 aprx. 12 inch Black Crappie, a 14-15 inch Chain Pickerel, a 12 inch Largemouth Bass, and a 13 inch Racoon Perch (Yellow Perch) in aprx. 5 hours of fishing. 
I'm going to try any suggestions i get and some others i'm thinking will work well, but i know the white grub and the orange jig-head were a winning combo for me.
I strongly suggest the combo being tried by anyone with a boat that can troll!

My biggest crappie have been caught trolling with smaller sized crankbaits. I use the older Lindy Shadlings in the small size and the size 4 Rapala Shad Raps. I have read about people using one of the Bandit series of baits for crappie but I am not sure which one. I have also caught lots of fish (though no real big ones) trolling and snapping lipless crank baits like the Rattle Trap or Rattlin' Raps.

For trolling, I normally use crankbaits, as well. I prefer the Bill Dance Flat A by Bomber. This lure has worked for me especially trolling near cover and underwater structure, in depths of about 7 to 12 feet.

There is an excellent article on trolling cranks for crappie on the BPS web site, go to the library and look under fishing. a bit of digging will turn it up. Tom

skewl, i've used the Bill Dance Flay A by Bomber. It works better then any crankbait I've used before it. Strangely, it has a Racoon Perch design and that is almost all it seems to catch. Never knew Yellow Perch were so canabalistic
