Went down to the local pond for the first trip of the year today after school with the temperature being a balmy 50* and decided to bring along with me a new fly I had made a few weeks ago, it's a bit like a cross between a Zonker and a Woolly Bugger and it really brought 'em in today. I caught 15 fish in the half hour I was able to be on the water and dozens more strikes. I thought it was interesting how all my bites came just inches under the surface, you'd think the fish would be lethargic at this time of year but I guess spring is getting underway. I even got a bite with the fly on the surface waiting for the marabou to soak up some water and sink! Anyway, I'll be making a few more of these flies, I'll try and get a picture up soon with a recipe if anyone's interested, but for now my Woolly Zonker is doing just fine and my season is off to a great start. It's about time!!

Congrats skewl...I went fishing today too...but only managed two crappie and one puny bass. I guess it was my first bass of the year...better than getting skunked, huh?

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, if it wasn't for my super smooth carbon drag, my 30 year old Trilene would bust!

Just an update me and my dad went out today to the same spot and caught around 30 crappies in an hour of decent size though this time it was on the aforementioned fly as well as a Yellow Perch colored Flicker Shad and a Clackin Crank, so I think it may have more to do with the location than the actual lure. Still a sweet fly though in my opinion, though I may be a bit biased.

Sunfish like bugs therefore they hit top waters, crappies like minnows and will hit sub surface in general.

this time of year the sun will be heating up the water so they may be looking for some warmth from the sun .
Take a kid fishing , If the fish aint biting entertain them. Photobucket
