Where are you fishing? Midwest salmon fishing can be very different from Atlantic or Pacific coast fishing.Sounds like you are fishing streams/rivers rather than a lake. Most of the guys I know that fish the Lk Michigan tribs use skein, either natural or artificial, and during the spawning run will occasionally throw crankbaits. Personally, my salmon fishing is done on Lk Mich and most guys troll with spoons for the kings and dodger/fly combinations for coho along with cut herring for both. Maybe Prober or Just Dave will answer for the west coast guys.

well im actaully fishing the pacific coast and i fish the rivers pretty heavy i have used cut plug herring but to my dissmay i have only hooked two in lets say 6 trips out im not sure if its my speed or what. so i have just been bank fishing since last year cause it seems to me that i have to get a little more information on the speeds , but for now i have just been using spoons and spinners which seem to be doing quite well thank you for the info by the way any thing helps

For me its a matter of how you like to fish, I like to cast rather than let the bait sit out there, when the salmon or steelhead slam a spoon or body baits its Awesome Baby! Try noisy body baits after dark if you find the fish have lock jaw, they instinctively react to the motion/noise when that can't see it.
