Hi all, we were out 14 miles fishing walleye and just about limited out for three guys, well we hooked into a steelhead and lost it so after we got the last eye I thought man this is early to see the steelhead, we usually dont really start even looking for them until more towards the end of July but I decided to run over to my favorite area and sure enough there were fish everywhere, I switched all the rods over to spoons and dypsie, dropped the riggers down and the games were on. we hooked up with 50+ steelhead in three trips the week of the fourth. I am hoping to get out Friday evening to see if they are still around, odds are they will be in Wheatly or Erieu shortly. Great Fun when you can get into em. |

Wow! That sounds like some great action, rseltz! My family was planning a trip up to the Great Lakes towards the end of August, think they'll still be around then? I'm not too experienced with huge lakes or trout and salmon for that matter, any go-to tactics or lures you can recommend? |

Skewl, unfortunately the Steelhead are pretty unpredictable in that regard, they will stick around as long as the bait fish they are feeding on stay in the area or until the water gets to warm for their liking. These fish move over to the Canadian side that time of year and they do really well out of Wheatly and Erieu Ontario in the time frame you are gong to be up. That said dont hesitate to bring your boat, there should be plenty of walleye and perch be had at that time. When fishing for SH in the big lake we troll with dypsies and riggers, mostly orange and copper or blues/purples and silvers but when they are hot just about any color will work. Have fun and bee safe |
