OK, this river fishing for migrating chinook salmon in the Sacramento River is very new to me. I was introduced to it last week by a friend (took my boat, he caught two while jigging) and now my wife and daughter want to go. We're making a weekend out of it on the 28-30 Sept, hopefully during the midst of the salmon run. However, still buying tackle and I'm running into the dilemma of buying Kwikfish or Flatfish. I have never used either, but reports are telling me they're very successful when "back-trolling" or at anchor and when wrapped in sardine fillets. This is all still new to me. So, the question is, have you a specific style, size or color that works well for you? Thanks.

I fish both the Sacramento & the feather with kwik-fish & flatfish I prefer kwik-fish in k-15 or k-16 depending on the flows (15 for softer flows 16 for bigger flows). sometimes on the sac they hit a thing called a sacramento spinner which is a spinner with a wire bridle set up to attach to your terminal line ,you put the weight on one side and the spinner on the other. but i gotta admit that many times myfishing buddy and I will set right next to regulars at Grimes and just blow them out if the water with kwik-fish while they use spinner rigs. we get lots of greif from them because we use kwik-fish, but we usually limit out before they do and with quality fish(20-30lbs range) TIGHT LINES TO YA ALL!!!! |

I've only had a few quickfish, bought them on a closeout at a store in Cowitchi(sp) Washington. I noted that they looked a lot like Flatfish and may be, in some ways, a Flatfish immitation. Flatfiah have been around for a long time. Perhaps the quickfish is better in heavier flows than Flatfish, don't know, sent mine to my kids in Oregon as well as some Eddie Pope Fishbacks---which I also got on a closeout. I would also think Lazy Ikes would be good but those have almost dissapeared. |

I would like the opportunity to meet with you on the Sac River. We will be there in two weeks. If you could meet up with me, that would be cool. This will be my last trip to the Sac River this year. I'll be heading to Key West on the 5th of October for two weeks, then returning for archery deer hunting on the CA coast. Let me know. My email addy is srandall@hughes.net. |

Try doing a search on Ebay for "Lazy Ike"..."Flatfish"...or "Kwikfish". I sell stuff on there...but am not happy with the management / software writers. Imagine that LMAO! |

Well, just got back from our weekend trip to the Sac and we did OK, considering there were a lot of "fishless" boats coming to the ramp. My daughter, Michelle, caught her first salmon ever on a sardine wrapped T60 Flatfish and she had a riot! She fought it like a pro. She said it felt huge! The "monster" went 15# on our scale. I just told her to imagine what a 50# salmon must fight like. Needless to say, it was still her biggest fish she ever caught in her life and it made me feel pretty good. But, that was our one and only on Saturday. Sunday morning my wife and I headed back onto the river alone while the teenager decided to sleep in at the motel. We had to quit at 10:00 in the morning in order to shower and check out of the motel and take the 4 hour trip back home. Wasn't a bad morning. My wife hooked into and I netted a twin Michelle's salmon while jigging a homemade 1 oz jig. My buddy makes them and swears by them. Can't complain. About an hour later she hooked into another salmon that shot under the boat and came undone in a matter of 2-3 seconds. Oh, well. Still a fun time. Want to thank those that emailed me with some suggestions that I gladly went with to help make this weekend a memory for us. We have pictures, but just got home. |
