Hi Guys.. Haven't been here in a while so I thought I'd swing by and wish you all a Happy New Year and offer my last fishing report from here in upstate NY.
Did my last "open water" fishing last Tuesday on our local stretch of the Susky just north of PA. The walleye fishing had been tough, but I'd usually been getting limits of 17-18" eaters for the past month or so. I've got a bunch of fish lovers here, so with not many in the freezer.. I needed some for my son's upcoming visit. I didn't hit the launch till after noon and by 4:00 I hadn't boated a fish! I'd tried all my favorite spots and was trying a 8 to 12 foot dropoff just off the current break when I finally felt a grab and set the hook on what turned out to be a 25"er.. which is huge for these waters. I motored to just above where I got the fish.. drifted back through.. and picked up a 27"er! In six drifts over the same spot I picked up five between 23 and 27". Lost one just out of reach that was like the 13.4#er I got there a couple of years ago. Everything came on an 1/8th bucktail jig tipped with a fathead minnow. This was by far my best stringer in the 40+ years I've been fishing the river! We've done better on Erie.. but that's a little different fishery. Next day the area I fish was wall to wall ice. Just waiting now for a mid-winter thaw! Good Fishing, Sluggo (Chris)
