I am headed over to the Miss. River this comming wensday and would like to be sure it's open? This will be the first time for me and am looking for any tips on what works best for this time of year? I'm thinking jig & minnow, wolf river rig and maby some crank baits? Anyone else have any special tips or tricks?? We will be in a boat and will try to work below the dam... Thanks B.H.

The river is open right now. I would recommend fishing below Lock and Dam#8 in Genoa, Wisconsin (which is 17 miles south of La Crosse. The river level is very high right now but should crest by the middle of next week. The best baits are River Jigs with minnows by Taylor Fishing Tackle and Wolf River Rigs with either a plain hook and minnow or a floating jig with hair tied to it with a minnow. Try stopping by Captain Hook's Bait and Tackle in Genoa and they can sell you some. Be careful though, there are lots of logs floating down river. And when looking for a spot, fish where there are other boats. Hope this helps.
    Tight lines.

i second that last comment genoa is a good pool to fish and yes there is a ton of crap floating downstream. the wisconsin side is doing better then the other. look for spots that are warmer if you can rip rap banks r my first hit usually and either a live bait rig or jig r my go to baits
