    Hello,

Currently I do all of my fishing from shore.  This has netted me, or folks I am fishing with, a total of 3 walleye!  All have come during the summer months, and all have come in the middle of the day.  Strange, from my understanding of the fish.  Does anyone have any tips on fishing walleye from the shore?  I currently live in Washington state, there are some lakes nearby that produce some big walleye.

Fishing from shore can be very productive. Find a place with deep water close by, and if it has current, wood, or gravel, the better. The colder the water, the slower your retrieve should be. When the water is in the low 40's, I like to reel very very slow in shallow water so the lure stays on the surface, and believe it or not the walleye will take it off the surface. When they do this, give the fish a second to get the lure in their mouth and set the hook. Another trick I have had good luck with it green lights. If you shine them on the walleye at night, their eyes glow like jewls, and they do not tend to shy away from it. I have left the light on the walleye and dragged a lure by them and watched them hit the lure. You could also try slip bobbers while you are casting. Just dont get too far away from your rod when you set it down, the bobber will always go under when you walk away for a brief second. Hope this helps any. Good luck

The norm for catching walleye from shore up here is to use pickerel rigs fished on bottom. Don't be afraid to fish in shallow water we catch them along reeds in 4-6 feet in late evening. The boat launch is always a good place to try as well because theres usually alot of baitfish hanging around there.

One of my favorite spots to fish from the dock that extends out over the lake about 25-30 feet over about 8'-14' of water depending on if they've let the dam out yet. There's this real nice older guy that's out there about everyday from spring to fall with a ZebCo 33 that's broke off past the first guide. The rod is all of maybe three feet and the tip would stab you it's so sharp! He loads up a hook with nightcrawlers and just let's it sit then every once in a while, tap the rod and little just to jig it off the bottom and will catch 2-3 Walleye's at a time. During the spawn him and a buddy will catch a limit. Leave for a couple of hours and come back later at night. It's really amazing. First time I met them my father-in-law introduces us and I didn't believe it until I saw.

I have tried and tried to duplicate that guy and can't get it. He's got some magic voodoo in that little ZebCo, but he can catch walleye's on the simplest tackle from basically shore or just a few feet away.

When I fish from shore for walleyes I usually rig up with a floating jighead and a worm. Thread the line through a round bell sinker and then tie on a floating jighead (I prefer white) with enough worm that covers the entire hook...and still has about an inch or two dangling from it. Cast out, let the bell sinker set and then leave the line slack enough for the jighead to rise about 6" off bottom. Every now and then pull in line (don't reel) to raise and lower your jighead (jigging). Leave it in the same spot about 3 minutes before reeling in and casting to a new position/depth. This method will work during the day, but the evening is when the walleyes come in shallower to feed. Good Luck!

Definetly some great tips here guys, I appreciate the feedback! I'm really looking forward to actually targeting these fish next spring, I think I caught the walleye fever when my girlfreind caught 23 incher down in New Mexico last year. Definetly suprised when I saw it, we were fishing a lake known for walleye and smallmouth so I was going for small mouth. I had her rigged up with a 1/8 oz jighead and green pumpkin grub, all of a sudden she pulls up that big boy in middle of the day in September in about 7-10 ft of water in a channel off the main lake in fairly clear water! I was definetly suprised given that I know very little about walleye, and from what I do know, I know its somewhat rare to find them in those conditions. He sure did taste good though! It was our first trip together and the first fish shes ever caught!

Fishing a walleye lake from shore is tough. Well couple things, one it sounds like you got the deep water close connection down. Was the wind blowing into the shore you were fishing ? Were you using live bait or lures and were you moving them or letting them sit on bottom. Another good summer hot spot from shore in the summer is spillways below walleye lakes. The spillways also fire up in fall and early winter, give those a try.
