I am amazed at how many taxes we here in New York get hit with. The price of gas, cigs, sales etc if getting ridiculous. Getting a fishing license is one thing I never mind paying for. I have read article after article about how funds are ear marked for the fishing industry and how government can not take the money and use it elsewhere but I do not see any benefits in and around my rural area. With the economy as bad as it is make me reconsider spending what as of Oct will be 29.00 fee. I can remember paying about 5 or 6 dollars for it. I think New York needs to reconsider this or justify the increase by showing sportsman the proof of where our dollars go! It a shame as this is one of the inexpensive means of entertainment as everything else cost to much to do. It seems like in order to go out and have fun with family and/or friend you have to spend a fortune. I see triple A baseball, Arena Football and local High School sports as and alternative to the high cost of everything else and it is just as exciting and more personable then MLB, NFL etc and you won't go broke doing it so then you will have cash left over to you NYS fishing license. Time to pick my priorties...Going out....Eating out....hmmmmmmmmmm...Buying a fishing license...hmmm better weight my options a little longer....well thats my two cents I may get one this year but before long I won't be able to go fishing or take anyone and will have to fish on my Playstation...say it ain't so. Best of luck to all out on the waters fishing. |

Welcome to the BB and the club assistantchief. Now for the bad news here in NY they also want to add a trout stamp and a marine species stamp to the license. The trout stamp ($10.00) would be required to fish waters that have trout in them. The marine species stamp ($20.00) would be required to fish for species such as Stripers in the Hudson river. Our economy here in NY is very bad and instead of cutting the politions pork projects we have to cut services and raise taxes. Lifemember and Bushwacker SMF upstate NY

That is really bad as my area in Delaware Cty and surrounding areas is mostly trout waters. I do not get to the hudson so that not and issue. I do go to a friends and fish the Upper Hudson in Fort Edwards for some awesome Smallie fishing but our state is already taxed to the gills...(No pun intended). When is to much to much. In this area no matter what you want to go out and do is a small fortune...i.e. movie, dinner or even a drive to anywhere. Life goes on. Thanks for the welcome. |

What does NY charge an out of stater? I live in Il, and the state takes it relatively easy on out of state anglers compared to Wi and some others. Becaause I live in the NE corner near the state line, I need to get a Wi. lic and salmon stamp every year. $60. The bright side is that I can add the wife to my ticket for $15 plus $10 for the Salmon Stamp. Tom Fishin' fool in NE Illinois |

Currently a non resident fishing license is $40.00 a year. And at the moment there are no extra stamps needed. After October 1st 2009 things might be differant. Lifemember and Bushwacker SMF upstate NY

You could look at it all this way. The fee increases go into the DEC Conservation Fund, meant specifically for use by the DEC for stocking programs, habitat and access improvement, game harvest studies for herd management of deer, etc. We do know where the money goes, more or less. It's one of the few portions of this budgetary fiasco Paterson threw out at us that we can actually say that about (and DEC came up with this proposal, not the politicians here in Albany). I particularly like how every increase in the state "sin taxes" on alcohol and cigarettes are supposed to go towards increasing health care costs, but are deposited into the state General Fund, where they could go anywhere, and they constantly call for decreases in the amount of health care expenditures because they can't find the funding (not that the state has a monopoly on this tactic, the Feds do the same thing). All in all, it could be much, much worse, with the DEC having to fight to get this money out of the state General Fund every year and being woefully underfunded. The state of Il is making the same kind of noise. I don't mind paying into the DNR budget, but I went ballistic when our recently impeached and convicted Gov decided to "Sweep" some Wildlife Fund monies. This sweep resulted in the loss of millions in federal matching funds. Fortunatly, we ran the crook out of office and his successor was able to restore the lost funds. If you have not been following this, our ex Gov has been named in a 19 count federal indictment. Chicago residents also pay the highest sales tax in the nation(Approx 10.25%, I live well outside the city and we only pay 7.25% or so, depending on the municipality). And you think you've got it bad! Now the DNR is talking about raising license fees by about 50%. I'll pay it without complaint until the next "sweep". As it stands, I pay $19.50 for my Il lic and a salmon stamp to fish Lk Mich, and $60.00 for the same priveledges in Wi. Unfortunately, a Wi resident only pays about $40 for simmilar priveledges in Il.

In NY they do put the license fees into the envirormental department and conservation funds; but then it is how they manage and disperse the money that seems to be the problem. Some of the money is transfered into the "general funds" for different reasons. Money is spent to reimburse salaries and some very high salaries of various people and not always people directly working as Encon Officers or others directly involved in duties that you would think connected in the proper depatments. It is the management and use of our license fees that are in question. If they would spend 100% of our license fees to enforce the wildlife conservation laws, restocking fish, preservation and maintenace of boat launches and etc., few of us would complain about our license fees. They now are talking about shutting down more fish hatcheries such as the one in Warrensburg, NY and that has me personally very upset! |

It's become an ENDLESS Toll Road with No EASY PASS! I strongly believe that there are many behind the scene politically influencial groups such as PETA involved. |

Just another way for Y to find funds from us as they can't balance a budget! Gas, Fishing, Soda, Cigs etc. Damn shame I pay 2.74 to 2.77 a gallon for gas here in Delaware Cty and I can go downstate to see my Mother and drive two mins over the border to NJ and pay 2.39. NY sucks. Hey Wellsley can you give me any tips on hooking up with more Salmon in Pulaski? Tackle, weights etc. Thanks |

Sorry chief I went once so I'm not the one to ask. But beware learn the regs. and follow them to the letter of law. The regs keep changing and the guy fly fishing next to you is likely to be a DEC officer without a sense of humor. Three of my workers went there a few years ago and two of them got tickets because they jerked the pole more than once during a retreive and the other because his hooks weren't right. ( cost them each $ 150.00) They never went back. The year I was there I caught nothing read and reread the regs and followed them to a t. After a few hours decided to leave thats when the guy fly fishing decides to start asking me some questions and shows me his I D. He was an Encon Officer. I hadn't done anything wrong he just asked question and checked out my tackle. Then on top of that there is the crowd. I would suggest going in the middle of the week it's not as bad as it used to be. Pulaski is like a ghost town compared to what it used to be. DEC killed their enconamy. Mostly diehards out there now. I think if you had access to a boat I would suggest hitting lake ontario before the salmon hit the river. |

If you live in a state were the money goes to F&W or the DNR consider yourself lucky. Here in Washington every penny we spend on fishing and hunting license goes streight into the general fund, and is spent to fix the roads in Seattle. Very little goes to F&W. It takes an act of congress just to get a boat ram fixed or for fish and game management. I stopped hunting in this state about 15 years ago because it was a big waste of money. I still buy a fishing license but even that is getting screwed up. Salmon fishing is all but gone and they stock trout just before opening day and they all get caught in 3 days and that's it until the next year. I grew up in Pa and every dime goes to fish and game from license fees and they have a pretty good thing going on there. Harry |

Next you'll need a fly fishing stamp or a trolling stamp. How about a stamp to use live bait. Come on now give it up to your state they need the money. |

It really depends on how you look at a fishing license compared to other things, how often you get to go , and how you plan to use it . I look at it as a form of entertainment . Catch a carp on a fly rod and tell me that's not fun , possibly catch a musky , hang out with good friends , compared to movies, used video games, going out to eat , you get the idea . now do you eat fish ? if so, what is the average price of a fish dinner? My estimation is around $5 .00 I bought a life time fishing license for the state of MINNESOTA but i also buy a husband and wife Wisconsin license and both states trout stamps. I buy a season license for Wisconsin because most of my fishing buddies live there and i may fish it more then one weak out of the year. |

Sure do feel sorry for you folks. When I turned 60, I was issued a permanent I.D. card, which allows me to hunt, fish and trap free. I'm allowed 6 deer and 2 bear. The tags on my vehicle are free, and I'm exempt from property tax!! I sure do miss Oregon, but not enuff to wanna move back! Allen |
