When I first got seriously into fishing about 4 or 5 years ago, all my gear was what I brought up from the basement from the collection my dad accrued when he was a kid or when shopping for the one fishing trip every kid goes on when he's young. Bottom line: it's all pretty old stuff. Fast forward to yesterday, I was out fishing with my friend when he went to make a cast and snapped the butt of one of my oldest rods off (maybe 10 or 15 years old). After scooping it out of the water with my rod (it was a scary few seconds watching it slowly sink in the dark tea colored water from the latest huge rainstorm) I came to the conclusion that I seriously needed a new rod. Which has brought me here for suggestions. I'm looking for an ultralight to med-light spinning rod, maybe 2 piece, not sure. Anyone seen anything cool in that category for under $50? Cork grip would be awesome, I'm slowly starting to embrace the creature comforts rod companies are adding on not to mention almost everything I have is a foam grip, so a change of pace would be nice. I fish some bass, mostly panfish and some trout, so I'm not looking for a cane pole, maybe 7' at the longest. The Shimano Voltaeus has caught my eye, anyone used it? Or should I be looking elsewhere? |

I have about 15 setups in my arsenal for various species of fish. With the exception of catfish, all my gear is spinning gear in the UL or Light action catagory. I do have a few favorites that I have used for years. One is the Shakespeare Micro Graphite, 7'0", 2pc, Light action (MS702L). I use 3 of these paired with Quantum Optix 10 reels and 6# mono for walleye fishing. Also have caught channel cats, drum, white bass, smallmouth and 10# carp on this outfit. It is still available (locally at least) at Walmart for just under $20. I've been using these for 4 years now and work great. My other favorite is a Quantum Teton, 7'0", 2pc, Light action (TLS70L). This is paired with a Mitchell Avocet 20 size reel and 6# mono for bass fishing. My primary lures are crankbaits, spinnerbaits and plastics. Dont know if its stillavaiable though. Got this one from Gander Mountain many years ago. You dont need to spend lots of money for a good rod, though others will disagree. I'm not cheap, I just spend my money wisely. |

Skewl, There are so many nice rods under $50 it's ridiculous...so I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding one. BPS, Cabela's, even Wal-mart has a great selection of rods in that price range. There is one thing I would suggest though...if at all possible...make it a one piece rod. I'm not big on two piece rods. |

shimano makes some good stuff. i bought a 6'0 ultralight shimano convergence from gander mountain for $60. i have caught more fish on that one than my falcon rod. i agree with mo65 one piece is so much better. all my rods were always two pieces then i bought a one piece and was hooked. ended up replacing my two other set ups with one piece rods. |

I disagree on the one piece vs two piece thing. Years ago, two piece rods gave up a LOT of sensetivity, but I don't fell that is the case anymore. For those of us who have to transport out tackle in the trunk of a car, a one piece rod is a disaster waiting to happen. I have both and found out the hard way that in my case, a one piece rod is a ticket to a broken rod tip. A rod worth checking into is the Berkley Cherrywood series, and of course the old standby, Ugly Stick. |

I went to WalMart today and got my dad a Shakespeare Durango, lots of backbone and fairly sensitive for an $8 rod, especially for my dad who is all about the mile long casts. Pegsguy, do you know if the Berkley Cherrywood Series is available at Bass Pro? That would be really convenient, I definitely prefer handling a rod before buying it. The Quantum Teton looks cool too, I'll see if I can get my hands on one of those to test out. On the subject of one vs two piece rods, I use telescoping or 2 piece rods exclusively and the only issue I've had with the 2 piece rods is coming apart in the middle of a cast which is annoying or the telescoping rods being stuck open. I don't have a ton of experience with single piece rods, but the convenience factor is enough to keep me hooked on the multi-piece sticks. |

Hey Skewl, BPS has the Berkley Lightning rods...which are a step up from the Cherrywood. When you mentioned the two piece rods flying apart...that is the reason I don't like them. |

I have light and medium Berkley Cherrywood spinning rods and like them very much. Got mine at Wal-Mart.

Hello skewl , i would go with a one piece rod if it was me..That is just my opinion .. yes bass pro shops has the berkley rods. The berkley lighting rods are a very good rod for the price. That is all i fished with for years until i got three skeet reese rod and reals this year .. The berkley cherrywood rods are also good, but like i said i would go with the berkley lighting rods or the berkley shock rods if it was me... Again this is just what i perfer...GOOD LUCK JOHN |

This thread has reminded me that years ago I had a Shimano Bantam 100 baitcaster on a Berkley Lightning rod...one of the finest combos I've ever fished. I fished it so long, I wore out the bushings in the reel, and that was back before you could get the rebuild kits they have out now. Wish I had it back...I would order that kit and fish that rod again!
