This is a darn interesting picture and story even if you aren't into fishing,
But please show it to anyone you know that likes to fish.

FYI:  This sturgeon is still alive, just worn out from the fight.
As the sports fishermen they are, they turned him loose after the photo.

This Sturgeon was caught in the Missouri River, North of Bismarck, North Dakota two weeks ago.
It weighed out at over 1,000 lbs and measured out at 11'1".

It was 56" around the girth and took over 6 and a half hours, and 4 dozen beers, for the 4 guys taking turns at the reeling it in.

Any Sturgeon OVER about five feet has to be released unharmed and cannot be removed from the water.

They are brood / breeding stock and probably older than most of us.

Anyone find out if this is true? I got the same email but it said that the fish was caught at the Lake of the Woods. Here is what I received in the email.

"This Sturgeon was caught on the LAKE OF THE WOODS , KENORA , ONTARIO two weeks ago.

funny I recieved this photo some time ago, it stated it was caught on the lower stretches of the snake river.  something seems fishy, no pun intended.

dosnt matter where or when, only if the fish is real that would be a catch of a life time.

there are places in this world that have sturgeon this big, I know they catch fish this size in nova scotia, and newfoundland, but these are ocean run sturgeon, and reach massive size, this is proabably a white sturgeon though and can be found to these sizes in the columbia and frasier rivers in Oregon and Washington. they do run charters for white sturgeon but man after hooking up with one, i would thin you would be shot for days. still this seems funny, I do not doubt the fish is real, but like the northern pike story we have all seen here recently, I am not so sure the location really describes the true story.

I did a little research and found another sturgeon that looks bigger. I guess it could be possible. Got to: i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj266/fishy-tanks101/Canada_Record_Sturgeon_lg.jpg

It is unfortunate that these stories get warped and distorted like the old campfire game of 'Telephone' where a saying or story is wispered ear to ear around the fire, then the original and final versions are compared. Brings to mind the old adage that all fishermen are liars except for you and I, and I often wonder about you! Be nice to know the truth. Tom

Yes they do get that big. I know guys that fish for them on the Columbia River in Washington and have got them up to 10 feet long. And on the Fraiser River in Britsh Columbia canada get them as long as 12 feet. And to answer your question they use american shad for bait and 80# test braid.
