I'm looking for ideas on what to do with the many spools of leftover line that I have. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has a bunch of spools with 30-70 yds of line on them, too much to throw away but not enough to spool a reel with. I must have 30 partial spools like this in 2-30lb test. Useing it as leader only goes so far. Tom Fishin' fool in NE Illinois |

Tom, got one suggestion for you. Keep what you think you'll need for leaders, then donate the rest to a local school for use in arts & crafts. Dave D.

If you know anyone who is into ice fishing, see if they could use some. Always drink upstream from the herd -----

The ice fisherman idea will work for the light stuff, I may just take it over to the local ice fisherman's hang out and let the guys pick and choose. I'm going to offer the heavier stuff to my grandson's preschool, they are always doing stuff like ornaments that need to be hung up. Tom Fishin' fool in NE Illinois |

You COULD splice some of the chunks together to make a SUPER super line There's a guy rehabbing at my mom's nursing home that uses line to make necklaces and bracelets Life Member David BB Linkmeister

My kids lose alot of hooks so I use my leftovers to snell my own hooks for them. I can buy a box of worm hooks cheaper then I can a pack of pre snelled hooks. I also tie gang hooks for night crawlers,2 or 3 hooks snelled in-line. Sam, Lycoming County North Central PA NAFC Life Member ,Angler Legacy Ambassador |

I also tie my own crawler harnesses and snells, but use fluoro leader for most of them. Tom Fishin' fool in NE Illinois |

Do you use braids? My leftover mono generally gets used up for backing for the braided lines.Braid will generally slip on spool if tied up directly & being its thinner in diameter than mono it uses less space on spool.Braid filler spools come in 125-150 yds & there usually is no sense in putting more braid on than those amounts. The inside connection mono to braid (back to back uni knot)will generally never see daylight unless your long line trolling & get snagged up or fishing larger gamefish which can take longer runs. Then you would probably want to be buying larger bulk spools of the braid.Which I still use mono backing to keep from slippage & having $50 worth of braided line on the reel that trolling reels or linecounters can easily hold, which to me is just money wasted.I buy spools of mono that I see on sale that match the lb test im running in braid just for that purpose.Just a thought & best of luck fishing. |

I do use a lot of braid, but all my braid spools are already backed with mono, and I see no reason to change line that has never seen the light of day and is unlikely to do so! My grandson's preschool wants some of the heavier stuff for craft projects, so I can at least put some of the 12-20 lb stuff to use. Tom Fishin' fool in NE Illinois |

I agree with the idea of donating the line too a pre-school. Many of the crafts used are meant to hang from something. Whether it is an ornament or a decoration that is meant for the ceiling, your fishing line can take care of it. Also, many reels meant for panfish usually max out at 50 yards of line. Your leftover line could probably fill a couple of panfish reels. |

I like using leftover lines and practice tying strange new knots...of course I forget the names or how to, but...when I find a new better knot...I won't forget how to tie that. |

The panfish reels that only hold 50-75 yds are the reason I have so manyleftovers! Tom Fishin' fool in NE Illinois |

Other than recycle I'm at a loss. You could make mobiles and donate them to sick kids. Make a cast net. Or you can use it for Rhino floss . "it doesn't matter if the horse is blind....Just load the cart anyway!!!" John Madden NFL Hall Of Fame) Fred Jefferson,MD (NAFC LM) (NAHC TLM) |
