The date for the 2009 meet at Raystown is September 23, 24, 25, 26, 27.  I look forward to seeing those that attended in the past and I hope I will see many new faces this year.

As in 2008, we will be staying at the Raystown Lake Seven Points Campground, specificly the group camp site, Medow Camp.  These facilities far exceeded our expectations!  If you are planing to attend and need an info pack, please let me know.

I got my vacation request form from work and I will be putting in for these days. I may be bringing a guest, not sure if she will be able to get off work these days or not? I would like to see this meet grow, but to be honest I like small meets where everyone is in touch with everyone.

Pete, you might want to contact the campground and  make sure the area will be available at this time this year. I read an article where there will be cutbacks with staff this year and certain ares might not be open as late in the year? Just a thought. I wish I'de of saved the article to send to ya.

diojisdad, Art & Pete are suspects but I'm an . Not many folks showed up last year due to variying reasons, I'm sure the price of gas being one of them. The way the economy and job situation is right now I can fully understand. I  sincerely hope this meet becomes a regular as the area is awesome and the people that I met there top notch. Once again Ed, get off your butt!

As Scott said, Raystown lake is awsome!  I will probably go there every year even if it is by myself!  I look forward to seeing everyone again this year.  I hope that Joe is able to get his health under controll...Perhaps we'll get some of them northern folks to stop in and wet a line with us.

Scott I plan on making this meet. If I don't I'll still chip in for the group site. Just let me know what the cost will be and I'll set it a side. ( worst case if there is only 4 of us ) .

Has this been posted on the Ohio site ?????

Also I talked to Pete about sending a invite to each state by way of the state threads.

Is this sill in your plans and do you want some help ???

Is there a mass e-mail for this event ? If so put me on it.

Ed, glad to hear you might be able to make it! Pete is the one who has been contacting the park to reserve the group site so I really don't know much about the prices and such. Once we figure out who is there we divide the cost between everyone equally. I really don't know if this has been posted on the Ohio site? I'm not a member over there. As far as I know no mass e-mail has been set up but that sounds like a good idea! Ed, we'll take all the help we can get, is there anything I should be doing? Hope to hear from Pete on this soon.

We joined the Ohio site as a back up Pete has it posted over there I checked yesterday. I also posted in the Miss. and every sate thread as a invite to everyone with this thread the one to check. I didn't think Pete or  anyone would mind so I just did it. We'll see if Pete wants to start a mass e-mail he has both of our addresses. So things are better in there and some people are more open that way.

I told Carol I was going and she could go if she wants. No answer on that yet. If I get a no I'm going to ask my brother Stan and his dog King if dogs are allowed in the park. If they say no then I'll more than likly hook up with someone and share my tent or at least get help putting it up. I'll just try to keep chipping away on this so it's not a last minute thing like the last two years and just say forget it..................

Keep it going guys!  I have not been informed of a rate increase for this year so it should be $80 / day for the entire site.  I received an email from a fella that said he will be bringing a motor home?  It was a while ago and I have not heard any more from him.  Right now I am in Ohio visiting my folks, but when I get home I'll be posting an up date.  Scott, you are correct if we don't get enough folks to attend, we'll have to get our own sites.  But it is early yet and I am not to concerned yet.

    Ya'll have a great holiday!

The site reservation has been made.  Pricing is the same. If everyone shows up that says they are, we will have 9.  It sure would be nice if more would show up!  The facilities are nice!

For those of you that are new for this meet, the boat launch is free.  The site has a group pavillion with electrical outlets, lights, tables and a huge stone fireplace at one end.  The weather will NOT be an issue for meals or for just sitting around the fire!

There are a lot of good fishing opportunities at Raystown: Lake trout, walleye, LMB, SMB, pike, musky, panfish, catfish and stripers.  Last year there weren't many boats on the water during our stay.  The dam, where most of the trolling for walleye, stripers and lake trout takes place, is a six mile boat ride from the launch.  But they do troll for lakers in the area I fish in last year-1 mile away(?).  There are many shore areas to fish from.  I will warn ya tho, it won't come easy!

Frank, next year I'm working the Finger Lakes Meet into my plans so I expect to see you next year at the PA meet. From what Pete told me last I talked with him he was working it out with Dave? Dave if you need anything, you got my # and e-mail. Pete, will we have room to bring firewood with? I was pretty disappointed with the kindeling they were trying to sell out there last year.

Pete maybe he has never pmed before thats why I said if he needs help to ask. Also, he might have limited access to a puter? I see he's from Maine so it would be a long trip.

I am not sure that Joe has computer access any more...I have sent him PMs & email but no response as of yet.

I have access to good oak for our firewood needs.  It's cut to length, we just might want to split some of it.

Scott I  love to make the PA meet. But right now all meets for 2010 are on hold. I don't know if I can make the NE meet until I know when my daughter comes home from college. The fingerlakes meet might be when we head to yellowstone so I might not make that one. If I can't make that maybe the PA meet might fit into the schedule. Its to soon to tell.

Welp. two days ago I put together a list of what Dave would need to bring along to the meet; I put it in an email and then I called him.  He told me he was working on his deck and the joist that he was standing on collapsed, causing a bad sprained ankle and a hair-line fracture to his heel.  His recovery time will be about 6 weeks!  So at this point it looks like Dave will not be attending...Prayers coming at ya, Dave!

Thanks for the thoughts guyz  Swelling has gone down 85%....and I can put a little pressure on it....but it aches when I don't have it up

I'll give it until the 15th (23 days)...if it's healed pretty well at that point, I'd be back in the game....and then the worst part would be trying to get a plane ticket...as I don't have a credit card.

I AM secretly putting together some striper info at the moment though

The idea of me coming to this Meet has turned into a pipe dream

Not only do I have a rear brake line on the car that is leaking....but we've discovered massive rust underneath the car around the rear axle area...to the point that it's no longer wise to put anymore money into the vehicle.

So instead of coming to the Meet...I have to start shopping for another car

    Disappointed to say the least

    LMAO Ed

Yeh....I was really looking forward to meeting you guyz...and I've been wanting to fish in the Northeast US since I was a kid. I even had bought a map of the lake...and was getting a tackle bag together in my head for those stripers there

Since I have so many new parts on this car...I'm going to get another one of the same year and model...and then strip this one and save the parts. That way....I won't be shelling out major $$$ in the near future if something goes wrong.

I ran across this video of striper fishing on Raystown

In that video they said the lake only had splake ( instead of lake trout). I did some looking ,and looking and looking and could not find any info on that. I even went to (should have done this first)  http://www.fish.state.pa.us/stockwa..._prior.htm

and Pa does NOT stock splake and has not for at least 9 years. Givin' that splake are a cross breed and donot spawn they must be confused on that point and wasted a TON of my time. Splake are a tought fish to catch were as laketrout will put the feed bag on if you stay on them till the dinner bell rings.........whew was that a long winded talk about nothing to do with this lake.............hey how far are the restrooms for our group site ?

Sorry to hear ya won't be making the meet, Bro!  Nice map of where the group site is, and your right about the shower/restrooms, about 200' away.  The pavilion is terrific, lights, electrical outlets all around, plenty of tables and a large stone fireplace at one end...

This is why I have stated that the weather will not be an issue for taking meals or leasure time around the fire!

For those of you that are not familiar with the area, Raystown Lake is about five miles from Huntingdon, Pa, Huntingdon county.  I will have two contour & hot spot maps there for anyone who needs to study the area.

The video was OK Dave but someone (not sure which one) made it sound like splake was in there...........if lake trout and brookies are there they have cross breed by them sleves to produce splake.
Thanks for the info on the bathroom.

First off, I will bring the info for this meet to the Finger Lakes meet.  Second, last year we all planed our own meals but since we were all cooking in the same area we decided to do pot luck...Everyone shared what they brought, and everyone helped with the clean-up.  As far as I know there will be two coffee pots going.  At least three kitchens will be there.  There are no formal menu plans...Sooo, I guess we are traveling by the seat of our pants!

Tomorrow I will start spliting wood for the campfires...

Dave, sorry to hear ya can't make it. I hope you can find something compatible for parts. Hopefully things start going your way! Pete, if you'de of let me know I could of stopped over this weekend and helped ya split some firewood! Ed, there are woods all around our campsites! Ed, don't bring me a rib-eye! We are trying to figure out what will work. We pretty much planned to each their own but last year their were only a few that showed up so it turned out that a few meals and breakfasts were more or less pot-luck wich worked out pretty well. If anyone has some ideas on this let us know, so far as I know this year will be pretty much the same. I might grab a bunch of burgers and buns to have a hamburgers night?

I will be bringing dogs and some sausage with buns...Coffee, creamer & sugar.  Not sure what else.  Oh, pop corn for the campfire!  Scott, I am also going to bring some snacks for the boat.  I didn't ask ya to help me out with wood because I didn't know when I would have time to work on it...I won't start on it until after lunch today...I must make a run to BPS and work on some odds & ends this morning.  Your welcome to stop over if you wish...I sure am gonna miss Joe this year...

I went to split wood today and discovered that the majority of the wood will not need to be split...It is just the right size!  So, I guess I'll put most of my gear in the boat in order to make room for a whole bunch of fire wood!

Art, I sent you a PM.

    UPDATE:

For those of you that arrive on the 23rd, you will need to see me about registering for the site.  For those that are arriving later, you will have to register at the gate house.  Everyone must stop at the gate house to inform them what group you are with and receive a vehicle pass.  I will have the NAFC banner displayed in front of the group site.

You can set-up your camp kitchen under the pavillion and place your chairs around the fireplace!  If someone wants to bring a radio, there are plenty of recepticals.  Please ask your questions now...I leave for the Finger Lakes on the 14th and won't get back home untill sometime on the 20th.

FYI, the parking spaces at the individual camping sites are big enough to back your boat and vehicle into.  They are designed to accommodate RVs.

Carol , Gracie and I are planning on getting there on the 23rd..............what do I have to see you about ???? ........ I will still have to stop at the gate and then what ????? What do I tell them , that I'm with the NAFC !!!!????? Am I just reading too much into your post or what ?????

Ed, I would just stop at the registration building and tell them your with the nafc group staying at the group site. Hopefully by the time you get there Pete and I will have already checked in with them. If I'm not mistaken they have to give you a vehicle pass?

Everyone, no matter what day you arrive, will have to stop at the main gate and get a car pass, also letting them know what group (NAFC) you are with.  If you arrive on the 23rd you will ALSO need to see me so that I can register you on the paperwork that they give me (as the organizer).  This is the registeration for the group site.  If you arrive after the 23rd then they will do this at the gate when you check in.  I hope this clears this up.

Pa. Raystown Member Meet – 2008

    September 26

4:00 am – Ring, ring, ring!  I get up in kind of a fog and stagger to the shower.  Afterward, I gather the last of my camping items that will need to go in the truck.  I finally sit down to sip my morning coffee, make this entry in my journal and wait for Scott to arrive.

5:00 am – Scott arrives and we hurry to pack his gear.  As you can imagine, the BS was flowing!  I haven’t seen Scott much this year so a lot of time is spent catch up with all that is going on in our lives.

6:00 am – We’re on the road!  Traffic is light as Scott and I head around Harrisburg.  The mountains are beautiful this morning even though the leaves have yet to sport their fall colors.  The sky is threatening and we hope that it doesn’t rain until we get our tents set up!

10:00 am – We arrive at Seven Points Campground filled with excitement, anticipating a great weekend!  The check-in process takes just a few minutes and then it’s off to Meadow Group Camp.  I pick a spot to make my camp and Scott does the same.  Before setting up tents we walk around the area.  The pavilion is beautiful and modern bath facilities are a block away

    raystouwnlake2ndyear037.jpg picture by doutt

…Soon Jas73 (Joe) and Pawalleyehunter (Art), with life member Kevin, son Bill and grandson, Cole arrive.  After much hand shaking and BS, we all set about to setting up our sites.

    raystouwnlake2ndyear011.jpg picture by doutt

    raystouwnlake2ndyear010.jpg picture by doutt

Afterwards we all head to the pavilion to check it out!  Wow, overhead lights, electrical outlets every where, tables and a huge stone fire place!

    raystouwnlake2ndyear016.jpg picture by doutt

It doesn’t take long for us to realize that this is a great group area, and so we set about the task of setting up a kitchen area.

    raystouwnlake2ndyear014.jpg picture by doutt

    raystouwnlake2ndyear015.jpg picture by doutt

After dinner we sit in front of this huge fire place, discussing our plans for tomorrow.

10:15 pm – Lights out for this tired boy!

    September 27

It rained so hard last night that it woke me twice!  But by 5:30 am it had pretty much stopped.  So when everyone woke, they gathered at the pavilion for fresh hot coffee.  We actually had two coffee makers going at the same time!  As we ate a little breakfast we discussed our plans for today.  Scott, Joe and I made enough sandwiches to feed an army.  Because once we get out on the water, we’re not getting out until we have to.

7:30 am – Three boats went out the free launch this morning; the “Bushwacker”, Joe’s boat and Art’s boat.  We looked like a big fan as we headed out to deeper water.  All three of us trolled and we headed toward Beer Barrel Bay, which is to the west of the launch.  The structure here is an attractant to lake trout, small mouth bass and several other species.  We trolled around and through this bay all day…Nada!

    raystouwnlake2ndyear008.jpg picture by doutt

In the early afternoon Scott and I worked the shore line all the way around this bay…Nada!

    raystouwnlake2ndyear029.jpg picture by doutt

We met outside the mouth of the bay and decided to work our way back.

5:45 pm – Back at camp, we decided to pull our resources and do a pot luck dinner.  Burgers, salads and of course pie!  After clean-up we all sat around the fire, listening to the rain, reviewing our day on the lake and listening to the sound of the crackling fire.  It is a peaceful evening and we took the opportunity to get to know each other better.  For most of us it is our second year and it sure is great remembering the past and catching up with all that has happened in our lives since last we met.  I brought up the club 25 year celebration and we found ourselves in agreement with the recommendations from what other folks have already posted on the web site.  This took us to next years meet.  After much discussion we have decided to start the meet on a Wednesday rather than Friday and stay with the last weekend in September.  This will help us deal with any weather issues.  I must remember to post this in the web site when I get home.  As you can imagine there was conversation around those that didn’t attend this year.  We all agree that hopefully they will be able to attend next year.

11:00 pm – Scott has already hit the sack and I leave the rest of the gang to make this entry and take my night time meds…

    September 28

5:30 am – I awake to the sounds of the kitchen and the pouring rain!  I am one of the last up today and there is a waiting line in front of the coffee maker!  While we sip our coffee, Bill cooks a great breakfast for everyone…Woo wee!  While we eat our fill we also start the packing process.  Stopping only long enough to do the dishes and take the group picture.

    raystouwnlake2ndyear019.jpg picture by doutt

11:00 am – After the packing is complete there are hand shakes and hugs all around.  Before we head out we promise to keep in touch…This is my last official meet for the year and I look forward to the rest.  Although this meet is short, with few attending, there is great potential here…Scott and I wave, honk the horn as we head out of the campground in caravan style!  It is raining steady as I head out the road, and I find myself reviewing the year I have been blessed with…Scott speaks about how nice this meet will be next year.  Another great year with some mighty wonderful folks!  See you around the fishing hole!

LOL, I only took like three or four pics while there, most of them of the lake and one of Petes walleye. I sent all my pics to Pete to post. Don't know what he's waiting for? He may be having a senior moment? I wish I'de of taken more pics. Pete said the little fish I caught weren't worthy of a pic. I didn't see Pete break his camera out at all.

    Ok here we go..............

Wednesday , long ride down set up tent in 80+ * heat was done after putting tent up. Pete,Scott, Art, Bill and Cole were already there when we pulled in as we were saying hi ,merlinvnv  and Maude pulled in. Just did a little looking around and got togather later to look at Pete's maps and put a plan togather for the next day.

Thursday , coffee and some chit , chat and Carol , Gracie and I are off to the lake. Nice surprise to find in the old chip I had for my GPS it had Raystown Lake with depth contures. After we got out of the no-wake zone we set up a satyed in the old river bed with 145' to 175' of water under the boat. Carol said she heard Pete say that there were a lot of standing trees in the water. Well later on we found one hung the downrigger ball up 92' down. Put motor out of gear and cleared lines , luckly we got every thing back. Did bring in a tree branch that went 32" and had someone else line on it. We did a lazy troll working our way to the dam but pulled up and headed back just one turn from seeing it. Make a run in for gas,ice and a look see for what was missing on the shelves..........Oh and picked some ice-cream up and did a DRIVE_BY eating it by Pete's site.................here is Gracie and I finishing it off..............

The next day we had a few spoons I picked up at the bait shop and were running to the dam area my plan was to work the shore line with a inline board , a rigger at 14' back 70' and a rigger at 25' to 30' back 70'...........the dam area...

then we worked the other side that had more cover and hooked up this laketrout (23")  25' down 70' back on a sliver/copper spoon...........

There was quite a story behind that fish that was shared around the camp-fire......we kept working our way back to camp and that rod fired again but we didn't hook up.............then the rod 14' down fired and Carol was in a tug of war with this 22" channel cat .............

and after some time the inline board picked up this smallmouth...........

and that was it for us............the next day was calling for rain so we just BSed the day away and enjoyed each other company...........a few shots of me getting ready for the group picture and Art just shaking his head............LOL............

    and the group.............

Carol was right on I should have moved the camera stand closer and I think they would be a bit clearer................

Sorry about not posting the pics yet.  I have been doctoring my left leg ever since my return.  I am on a steroid program, have had a full battery of x-rays and will get reevaluated on the 12th.  My leg is getting better since I have started the steroid progeam.  That and the doctor gave me some real good pain killers for bed time!  When I got home from the meet, I was to the point of not driving the truck any more.  That is much better now.  So sometime today I'll post the pics of the BIGGEST fish caught at the Raystown Meet this year...lol!

These pics were all taken on Scott's camera...

The lake it's self is beautiful, and the camping facilities are very nice even though it doesn't have full hook-up.

Thursday Scott and I trolled to within about 1/2 mile of the dam before we decided to turn around and work the shoreline back.  This is where we met Ed & Carol the first time.  We worked the west shoreline about half way back to the docks before deciding to call it quits for the day.  But we did manage a SMB and a nice red eye.

Friday we had planned to scoot straight up to the dam but the winds were strong and it pushed us all over.  So we turned around and headed for "Beer Barrel Bay".  We worked the entire shoreline...nada!  I took the "Bushwacker" back ou to the mouth of the bay and decided to drift a paddle tailed jig off the bottom.  It didn't take long for a 25" walleye at 90' to decide he wanted lunch!  It was a battle all the way into the net, and Scott did an expert job of netting him!  I took a pic and we quickly released him into the depths...

It rained all day Saturday so we stayed under the pavillion next to a hot fire and lots of food!  This is a great meet, as they all are, and I enjoyed making new friends and look forward to making new one again next year!  Stay well, friends!

Ok, time to set the record straight...The walleye that I claimed to have caught was actually floating (dead) at the mouth of "Beer Barrel Bay".  Scott and I thought it would be good fun to see how long this "story" would hold out!  If I hurt anyones feelings, I appologise (sp).  I actually hooked one fish, a SMB, and it thru the hook at the boat!  Scott and I have not been to successful at Raystown, but we feel like we're getting a handle on it...
