Thanks for the post, Dave. When everyone weighs in, I'll spend time transferring the posts from the initial Pm to the new PM.

OK guyz...this is LAST CALL for folks interested in getting together at LOTW and / or Rainy in 2009.

There's a PM that was started..and unfortunately there were a couple of folks left out of it....and after re-reading this thread...even more were left out Frowner<!--graemlin::(-->

SO if YOU have an INITIAL inkling to coming to one lake or the other...post it here...and we'll get a PM started with ALL the folks Big Grin<!--graemlin::D-->

Wow. We're gonna start another meet here. Maybe two. I'm interested in LOTW mostly, but Rainey is good too. Unfortunately, June is not usually a good month for me to get away, but it is the best time for fishing. I have fished both of these lakes and they are both good lakes for about all species. They are both very BIG also, so a GPS is good to have on board. I prefer to fish the East side of LOTW because of all the islands and structure. Of course, that same structure can be tough on your prop if you're not alert.

I'm in. Rainy lake first, because our cottage is on there, and then Lake of the Woods. Much has been written already, but we'll wait for turnip to copy over the initial PM so others can get caught up on what's been written already.

My understanding is that whichever shore you launch from is the license you need. Please correct me if I am wrong!

You're wrong. That may hold true between states in the U.S. but not internationally. If you launch in the U.S. and cross into Canadian waters, you'd better have a Canadian license and vise versa. The Great Lakes too. ie: If you launch on Lake Michigan in Illinois and cross into Wisconsin, you'd better have a Wisconsin license.

Yep, That's what I said Pete. Most states it's OK, but does not hold true on the Great Lakes or internationally. And most states are seperated by rivers, not by lakes. Now let's say you launched in the Mississippi from Wisconsin. You can fish either side of the river, but you must have a Wisconsin license and return with your fish to Wisconsin. But if you launch in Rainey Lake in Minnesota with a Minnesota license, then cross by water into Ontario, you better have an Ontario license.

On Lake St Clair, you have to stay on your side of the line if you don't have both licenses. Only problem is they don't paint that line very good. And i don't know how well the Canadian Authorities mark their boats.

It's a fact on Rainy Lake Pete...but laws are laws. We fish right near the lake border and have been checked a couple of times already. The Border Guards were only interested in seeing if we knew exactly where we were on the water and which side of the lake border we were on. We had GPS (that day) and knew that we were about 500 yrds. from the border. Then they wanted to check licenses and our creel, as well as our I.D's but I refused giving all of those. They were Canadian Border Crossing Guards and not the Ministry of Natural Resources, the guys that we have to show our licenses and creel to. They were real snotty with us, but I held fast and eventually they moved along down the lake. Not a very professional group in my opinion but that's how it is since all border crossings have tightened up Frowner<!--graemlin::(-->.

I don't even want to fish anywhere near the border with the Illinois registration on my boat. We were checked by the OPP last time on Rainey with an MNR guy on board, and they were very pleasant and professional. They looked at our licenses and creel and even answered our questions about the slot and the lake. I'm sure that if we were close to the border, the border patrol would have given us a hard time. I've read some horror stories from guys that's happend to.

If we do go the Rainy lake in June route and decide to put it in the Member meets forum that puts it in direct conflict or competition with the Gwinn meet. I never gave that a thought about conflicting with anothr member meet. But folks (those considering attending this trip) will have to make the same decision either way...6 a one and half a dozen of another. June will be a conflict month for many. This year I have the N.E. meet in May, Gwinn in June, fingerlakes in Sept. and Raystown in Sept. Not to mention various mini meets in Pa thru the summer. So far all systems are go with a trip to Washington to see Yellow Bird and fish my way back to LaCrosse with Dave for that meet in 2008. I don't think I will get to any other meets that year except for local Pa ones. Right now LOTW is top priority for 2009. Everything else will have to work around that!

turnip from Minneapolis you go to International Falls/Fort Frances border crossing which I believe is about another 5 hour drive down HWY #53. Our cottage on Rainy Lake is a 1/2 hour drive from the I-Falls border or Rainy Lake Tackle and Sports Wink<!--graemlin:;)-->.

Great to hear you may be able to make one of these trips Nam Cool<!--graemlin::cool:-->. Right now we're working on determining which part of the year (and which lake) is best for everyone so put in your preference. Keeping in mind of course that things can/will change.
BTW....I'll be sending two of my baseball teams to Apple Valley this year to attend a couple VAA Tournaments. They will be there the May 11th weekend (12 yr. olds) and the May 18th weekend (15 yr. olds). I may make one of the trips with them and if I do, I'll let ya know and maybe we can meet somewhere (preferrably on the water Big Grin<!--graemlin::D-->).

WalleyeWayne, keep me posted on the baseball trip in May. I am right in the neighborhood. Around that time we'll go to one of my favorite crappie spots and get on some big slabs!

Nam, this topic originally got started with a series of posts by Spoons&cranks, davessett2000 (hot for a musky bite), Wayne and Badger. Followed by Bob, Lazarus, myself and several others. I stated that Dave & I couldn't commit until 2009...thus to page 1 of this thread. We tried doing a PM to discuss this trip, but as time went on many wanted to join in, which made it impossible to keep the PM going...Thus, we have this thread.

So if you read from the begining you will get a feel for how we "morffed" (sp) to LOTW/Rainy! As Wayne stated, this thread will change over time, and will more than likely turn into two (2) trips!

So, anybody that is interested in either trip should continue to monitor this thread and submit any input you might have...Because we will GET'ER DONE! Roll Eyes<!--graemlin::rolleyes:--> Cool<!--graemlin::cool:--> Big Grin<!--graemlin::D-->

    PS
Check out the LOTW thread in this same forum...I believe there you will find the "begining of this discussion!" Wink<!--graemlin:;)-->

Ya gotta admit my Bushwacker Brother that many folks are uneasy trying to plan for so "far out" of a time frame (2009) Red Face<!--graemlin::o-->

But yet there are others of us that are quite comfortable doing just that Wink<!--graemlin:;)-->

And let's face it....there's SEVERAL of us itchin' to get together with ya whether it be on LOTW or Rainy Big Grin<!--graemlin::D-->

Only the many months ahead will we be able for ALL of us to finalize plans and actually get together Smiler<!--graemlin::)-->

Keeping the thoughts open between us and the communication going will only make things work to the best Wink<!--graemlin:;)-->

So Wayne, how bout putin' dat link back up for the cottages ya had and Ray, that was a good link ya had for the LOTW lodge. That will give folks something to review...I wonder how the musky bite is at Rainy in Sept? Roll Eyes<!--graemlin::rolleyes:--> Big Grin<!--graemlin::D-->

I was watchin' the In-Fisherman show this morning and they were at Rainy Lake fishin' for walleyes (I already saw this one). What caught my attention was they were saying the walleyes were in close to shore...Does this mean spawn? Eeker<!--graemlin::eek:--> They were wearing short sleeves and shorts so I gather it was about June or early July? Knowing the time of year for this show would go a long way to helping me make up my mind. Roll Eyes<!--graemlin::rolleyes:--> Wayne, can you shed some light on this?

Dave, if I would fly in then I would be at a loss for a boat...

That was probably late May or early June. The walleye's go up on the mud/sand flats and start "nosing" out grubs and such. They are only there right after the spawn (warmer water in the shallows Wink<!--graemlin:;)-->) and then they gradually move out to the reefs (structure). You can hammer them on rapala's at this time of year. After that we vertical jig and drift-bounce for them with monnows & jugs. Early June is still the best time of year on Rainy Lake!

Here on Muskegon Lake the Walleyes are pretty much in the same areas throughout the year. I would call it the shallows which can be from 4' to 15'...what seems to make a varience is the terrain their in. Our flats are the old slab wood flats from the lumber era here. Then not such a long ways off there are heavy to moderate large weed bed. Stormy type weather brings them out into deeper water and are caught on some pretty nasty days/nights. The bigger fish prefer to late evening through the night. Smaller fish can be caught most anytime but not much bigget than 15" to 18" in size. All in all there's hard work to get them but they are excellent eaters and worth it. Papa_d Big Grin<!--graemlin::D-->

    OK Guy's.
Leave it to me to throw a mind-numbing monkey-wrench into the mix, but here goes....

How about a houseboat trip??? They have some awfully nice houseboats for rent. Our family of 13 did that one year for a full week. We dropped anchor each night at a different bay (while towing our own fishing boats behind). We covered a lot of the lake over that period. If I'm not mistaking, costwise it's about the same as a cabin/resort, but the upside is that you are basing out of a mobile location vs. a fixed location.

    Just a thought guy's.

The houseboat that we were on didn't have a screened in porch. The upper deck and stern on the boat was open air. Why worry? You're gonna be too tired from catchin all those fish to stay up all night anyway!!! Big Grin<!--graemlin::D-->

We would be talkin a lot of fishin boats to tow along. I don't know if that would be possible. I thought the boats were more expensive than a resort. But yeah house boats are a hoot. We did one in Kentucky when I was a kid and have thought of doing one again but the prices are pretty steep. Maybe I'm wrong, clue me in if I am.

I don't think thats a good idea. Some people may be worried about finding their way back to the cabin as it is without having the cabin up and leave on them. And Pete you're already talkin about limiting the # of boats. If I'm gonna take a dream trip the only limitations I wanna think about are my daily bag limits.

Fuzzy raised a good point that I hadn't thought about too with charging all those batteries. I just don't think a house boat is feasable for a large fishing group These are all questions that still need to be answered. But I would think the houseboats book up quick so sitting on our hands won't help. Anyway those are my two shiny pennies. Anyone else wanna ante up?

Looks like it's comin down to Rainy in June or LOTW in Sept. Have Alvin put his 2 cents in. There should be plenty of people wanting either one. Worst that could happen is split trip but there would be a good group of folks to fish with no matter what happens. I imagine we'll have an official vote when the time comes closer.

RT8 Wackenbush Lodge's location is a closely guarded secret that cannot be divulged openly on the BB Wink<!--graemlin:;)-->. We have a cottage on Rainy Lake and if/when we go to Lake of the Woods, we all would have to determine where to set up Da Lodge. There's no shortage of resorts on either lake, so that is something else we would have to consider. I would invite ya'll to stay with us at the cottage, but the family (mine and the relatives) will all surely be there to meet & greet (and fish of course) so I can't offer anyone any room at this time. Sorry Frowner<!--graemlin::(-->.

Cheri, please read this entire thread. The jest here is to determine which meeting you would like to attend. LOTW in the fall or Rainy in the spring. Both will be in 2009. So now is the time to ask questions. Some have already committed to a specific meet but there is time to think about it. Big Grin<!--graemlin::D-->

Well, When I first saw your avatar, which on my computers is kind of small - but you looked familiar. So after seeing a few more posts, that avatar just nagged at me so I went and read you profile and at that time, you had you full name listed. And I thought no way - it is who I think it is. In that avatar, you looked like my ex and I was afraid, I was very afraid, because we broke up on not so good terms due to his abuse. So I vowed to not post on any of your posts/thread and avoid any topics you were in. But then you started posting pics of your self along with your kids, and I then saw you were not him. It was a great sigh of relief. So thats the story. Now I am more then happy to met ya and maybe learn some walleye tips from you - cause when it comes to walleye fishing, I really don't know much about it. I have caught walleyes before but mostly by mistake. I have only targeted walleyes once - we used 1/8 and 1/4 oz jigs in certain colors with a leech - so, I know what to do on a certain water in my area, but I'd like to learn other waters as well as what works on them waters and maybe using things that could work on all or most waters.

Well, ya......... but the past is the past and well just leave at that and move on the subject at hand.

Ok, so I am pretty sure it will be Rainy for me. Question, where abouts is this? Is this fishing in the States or in Canada? Besides walleye, what else is there?

Has anyone done the Rainy while house boating?

More questions to come I am sure.

I'm for Rainy on the Canadian side. We fish walleye, smallmouth, northerns, crappie, perch and musky around the general area I fish (Seine Bay, Swell Bay, Redgut Bay, etc.) There's houseboats to be rented from several places, but I intend on staying at our cottage in Bears Passage, Rainy Lake.

OK, here is another question - I am guessing there is that imaginary line on the lake like there is on the Mississippi River where it is ok to be from either state and still be ok with you fishing lic from either state (example - your on the Minnesota side but your Wisconsin fishing Lic covers you). What is the issue if you start on the US side and cross over - are you allowed to? What about border issues? Sorry for the questions but I am new to this whole Canada thing and have no clue.

This part of the lake is easier to fish if you don't have a very large boat. The south side is very wide open water (Miles and miles) while the north near here is all islands anc channels. Just a thought.

I am bringing this to the top so we don't loose track of it!  Remember folks, this is for 2009.  I know that most of ya don't even plan one day in advance but this is a little different.  At the end of 2008 we will need to make our reservations and have determined which (or both) activity we wish to attend.

Ray, I am still on for LOTW in September!

Can anybody throw their hat in the ring for this? My son and I would defintely be interested. I have fished LOTW, but never Rainey. I always did want to try smallies on Rainey. LOTW was an excellent fishery last time I was there, which was about 8 yrs ago now. We fished pretty much exclusively for walleye.  We had a tough time finding small enough fish to finish out our limits. The slot limit was in effect and for the last day and a half, we couldn't hardly find a walleye small enough to keep. Nice problem to have!!
