Take care and good luck fishing! |

Given the vast quantities (and qualities) of our Canadian lakes it always leaves me wondering why the NAFC mag mainly stays south of the border. To fish on a lake and sometimes see one other boat, or no one else is truly a Canadian thing. Of course access and travel time limits most people. We seem to have our own preferences for lures and baits. (Lucky Strike, Williams etc.) And fishing guru's (Bob Izumi). Anyway, I am still trying new lakes in the near north district of Ontario, next stop Timmins. The French river was amazing (Woseley bay), The pike gave my equipment a workout. Keep posting great fishing locations and remember to "keep your stick on the ice" |

Originally posted by: Norhternpike48 on 9/24/2004 1:06:42 PM I have one for you guys, I was in Perth ON two days ago. I stopped between jobs at a likely looking Smallmouth fishing spot on the Tay river. Dressed in buisness casual I figured a few casts and then I'll grab a bite on my way out of town. With only a rod in hand and a firetiger jig tied on I made my way down to the river. I set myself up under the bridge on a small rock overlooking the river. It looked to be about twelve feet deep and clear. On the first cast I pulled out a 3.5 pounder. on the third cast one a little bit larger. On the fifth cast, I began to reel and the line stopped. I thought I had snagged a floating branch. The started moving off to the left. I knew I was on to something, then the fun started. Like a freight train building up speed the fight was on, For ten minutes we battled, left, right, tail dancing across the water, I thought she has met her match. I finally reeled her in. Since I had spooled up 6lb test I quickly realized that lifting out of the water on the line was a no go. I bent over and got a thumb in her mouth, It was then that I determined that this brute was over 22 inches and probably closing in on the 10lb mark. Well with the fish in one hand (still in the water) and the other holding the rod I removed the hook and prepared to stand up. The fish had other ideas. with a mighty strain she started off again, in one quick motion she moved forward. I leaned out, lost my balance, did an olympic qualifying half gainer into the river. I still had the fish but it quickly dawned on me with both hands occupied, treading water with only my feet,(and the fish heading deep)one of us had to admit defeat, and now the bass had home field advantage. I dropped the beast, swam ashore, and took stock of personal belongings, Keys wallet etc. I withdrew to my car and changed clothes, (fortunatly I had brought extra clothes for this overnight trip) and headed out under a cloud of defeat. Well as I sit here (home again) my wallet is still drying, the cut on my bass holding thumb taped and my sprained finger on the opposite hand on its way to a full recovery. I realized the not only did she beat me, she beat me up. Bass 1 me 0. All I have is the story and wounded dignity. But it's not over.......she drew first blood. |

(from Toronto) Lots of good spots along Hwy #7 to drop a line in though. As it turns out I am going back up that way on 16 Oct, (Carelton Place) been vounteered to help my sister move. Of course all the young people head for the hills when a move is involved. I'm gett'n too old to load furniture. But this gives me another shot the smallmouth that stole my dignity....lol. All the bush roads are full of water and there are still too many leaves on the trees for grouse (partridge) hunting. Mine is out and I think I will sell and buy smaller aluminum in the spring. (Far easier to haul and get in and out of the smller lakes)I have noticed that too many people have more boat than they need. (I'll catch flak for that one) Wayne, Thanks for the support!! Originally posted by: WalleyeWayne on 9/27/2004 7:54:39 AM Okay Piker, I'll be the first to throw some flak <!--graemlin::p-->. I own two 14 footers and am looking right now to upgrade to a 17' or 18'. I sold my "in-town" boat and keep the other one at camp. I usually only fish with my son and the dog, but a 14' isn't quite doing it on the bigger lakes (Lake Superior or Rainy Lake). I am 6'3" and my knees start to ache when sitting in the boat for any length of time. I prefer the higher seating, more room to walk, and a little extra "pacing space" for the dog so thus I am looking for a larger boat. Lest we forget, it's tough to pull the kids on water ski's with a 20hp. 14' boat. So....is a 17' boat more than two guys and a dog need?....probably, but I want comfort and stability <!--graemlin::)-->! |

Originally posted by: Norhternpike48 on 9/27/2004 12:50:11 PM W-Wayne, I set myself up for that one....lol. I'm sure you've seen the guys... big new Navigator/Escalade pulling the 18' Ranger complete w/metal flake paint and a 200hp Merc. And the kicker is, he gets away 2-3 times a summer to fish. Of course around Toronto you have people who have to have the latest toys. (Birkenstock wear'n, wine sippin, tree huugg'n yuppies) Yup I opened myself up for the flak. You see I presently have a 16' fiberglass w/full camper top and sleeper seats mated to a 50hp. (more of a ski boat than fishing) But now being a single guy and no dog, all I need is a little 14' Lund aluminum with a 20hp Yamaha 4 stroke. No burning excess gas pulling it or or on the lake. Another thing is, these smaller craft can get in and out of those tight bays and shllow flats. My point is, how much boat does a person need? Everyones situation is different - Family size, multi use, and as you pointed out, a guy 6'3" just can't spend a day in a 12' car topper. In my neiborhood almost every third driveway has some type of boat. the sad thing is I'm sure at least 50% of them were bought to impress friends and haven't moved for years. Well I'm ready for more opinions, but that's where I stand. (besides W-Wayne, if you didn't have a boat how would you ever leave Thunder Bay? or have built roads to you guys yet? |

Now that the year is drawing to a close, has anyone else noticed that this was not the best year for fish? Everyone I met all spring/summer/fall (southern Ontario) has complained of the same thing. Hopefully this was just an off year and as cycles go things will change. I would like to hear from Other parts of the country to find out if this is just an isolated case. |

(but not wanting to be the first to admit I wasn't having the success I thought I should) I believe the catch ratio is down this year. Sure I have had the odd "good" day, but there have been too many days when it seemed nothing was interested apart from the odd sunfish or crappie (hour after hour of drown'n worms)........interesting Maybe we could get one of those large *** government grants to set up study on this <!--graemlin::p--> lol |

THE FIRST AND FOREMOST IS THE FACT THAT I'VE BEEN OUT OF COMISSION FROM JUNE 8- TO SEPTEMBER 26. THIS WAS DUE TO NECK SURGERY THAT HAD TO BE DONE. THOSE ARE MY FAVORITE TIMES OF THE YEAR FOR FISHING. I'M AN AVID PANFISHERMAN AND I MISSED THE ENTIRE SPAWN THIS YEAR. THATS A CRIME IN ITSELF. THE THE NEXT THING IS THAT UPON RETURNING TO WORK I'VE BEEN WORKING LIKE ALL GET OUT TO TRY AND "CATCH-UP" FOR LOST TIME. I'VE WORKED AS MUCH OVERTIME AS THEY WOULD GIVE ME. THE VERY MOST IMPORTANT IS THAT I DIDN'T MEET WITH JODA AND THE LIPSTER UNTIL OUR ST. JOE FISHING MEET. THESE TWO GUYS HAD MADE THE LOSS OF SUMMER ENTIRELY WORTH IT. I'VE NOT ONLY HAD THE BEST TIME OF MANY YEARS BUT ALSO MET TWO OF THE GREATEST FRIENDS EVER. THEY'VE INSPIRED ME TO CONTINUE ON WHERE I WAS GOING TO QUIT. JODA SHOWED ME THAT THERE IS NO QUITTING; AND I'M VERY GREATFUL FOR THAT. I'VE TURNED A NEW LEAF AND MADE MANY NEW FRIENDS ALSO. THANKS FOR EVERYTHING JODA AND LIPRIPPER. |

Our summer was cooler and somewhat wetter than past summers but the last 4 years have been excellent for fishing. Thus, perhaps this year was a "catch-up year" for the fish to rebound a bit? I was talking with a native guide in August about how slow the fishing had been this year and he believes it is nature's cycle where the fishing slows to allow for a replenishing period. He asked me; quote:"If you continued to catch fish like you have in the past 4 or 5 years where do you think the fish would come from?" I think that's a pretty fair question and perhaps we may be in a downward spiral for a couple of years to come? |

I was getting kinda tired of bombing the lake with everything in my tackle box and thinking, maybe I've just lost my touch. (the eye of the tiger...lol) Could be part of the reason but, a lot of people have found the fishing a little slow to downright frustrating this year. If nothing else it makes things more challenging and that's what it is all about. That's why it's called "fishing" and not "catching" Good luck on the ice Wayne, I'm going to sit the frozen season out this year. (I think <!--graemlin:;)-->) |

but as a whole fewer fish and hits than last year, with trout being a rare keeper now. for trout that isn't much of a change, the last few years have been bad, mostly a habitat problem but also an invasion of swimmers!! lol <!--graemlin::eek:--> <!--graemlin::confused:--> <!--graemlin::rolleyes:--> this year it became my curse, i would leave my early morning spot for a more consistant hit. mostly pools below ripples and rapids, the occasional falls. great spots for holding trout but instead they were all full of people swimming!! this made for some interesting views but no place to cast. the first time it happened it thought no big deal, i just moved past down to the next pool. more swimmers, next...and the next mile of river all swimmers!! <!--graemlin::rolleyes:--> so i climb up out of the valley, walk half a mile to a nearby lake with nice trout and even some black bull head catfish.... and.... 4 different groups swimming!!! i felt like giving them directions to a swimming pool but just started laughing, after all when i go swimming i prefer the trout pools too! <!--graemlin::cool:--> <!--graemlin::D-->
oh, and i did have a few good days for trout. early spring sea runs had no swimmers - they would have turned blue. <!--graemlin::eek:--> and then i just switched to rainy days, just driving and fishing the road side pools teaching some newbeis how to fish trout. i took them to one spot that always produces, warning them first the size may vary a lot but there would be at least a few fish caught. they were a little leary, already soaked from the earlier spots and wondering why we didn't drive this far out to begin with. i told them the local kids know all about the spot and would have fished it out early in the day but the pool would now have calmed down and be holding trout. this was about 2 hours before dark. the pool was full... and this time with trout!! <!--graemlin::D--> they were all sizes. we landed some from 5 to 9" first and then a couple of 10". normaly you catch the big guys first but the smaller ones didn't give them much of a chance. this stired things up so the bite cooled off. i took a little time then to show them how to work the pool. the first novice that tried working the bait down the ripple and slowy rolling the lenght of the pool was rewarded with a nice fat 13" brookie that expolded out of the water when it hit - at a range of only 3' from shore. the newbies were hooked on trout fishin'and spent the next 2 weekends driving around trying to find that spot again, and then catching a few more nice fish. <!--graemlin::D-->

Originally posted by: WalleyeWayne on 12/7/2004 4:45:40 AM You know Lipper it really is a tough call. The walleye possession limit for our American friends is way too tight (1 in possession). Slot size & creel limits I agree with (for everyone) but why squeeze someone because they are not Canadian? There were, and continue to be, a few that come accross the border and are caught poaching but that doesn't mean we have to paint everybody with the same brush. We have game wardens that are paid to look into this stuff so just let them do their job. The resort owners have lost millions because of the restrictions. My camp is right on the Canadian/USA border and I am surrounded by resorts who cater specifically to our border friends. Hence, there is a 4-1 ratio of Americans vs. Canadians fishing where I fish and almost all are very friendly and respectful. I have run into the occasional "rogue" fisherperson who has followed me around the lake and all but anchored onto my boat (it happens once or twice a year). I know they're American because of the boat numbers but again that has been the exception, not the norm. For any of you guys or gals from this BB that get a chance to come fish Rainy Lake let me know in advance and I'll show ya'll some real Candadian hospitality <!--graemlin:;)-->. |

Originally posted by: WalleyeWayne on 1/13/2005 7:46:39 PM My sincere apologies Norhternpike48 but I didn't see this post until tonight. Whitefish Lake is an hours drive from where I live and is one of the most popular walleye fisheries around. The lake is not big and has an average depth of just over 6' but it has everything needed to be a self-sustaining lake. It has northen pike in decent sizes and perch, when you can find them. There are probably over 100 camps on the lake and a few resorts (Cedar Sites Resort) and also a very good sized public launch free of charge. I've got a map of the lake if you're interested and can e-mail it to you. Ice fishing is second only to Lac Des Milles Lac. The lake is hit hard year round but just continues to produce excellent fishing so it's one I'd recommend for sure. If you need anymore info. just ask. If you're moving here we may have to consider some fishing together if you're interested. |

If you do have trouble just give me a call and I'll head up to the Great White North with a couple of heavy fly rods. I'd like to catch one of those buggers.

Whacking and poking your Snow Sharks with shovels and ice scrapers just might give those abused critters a bad attitude before I make my way up to The Great White North. I suppose I'll have to bring along my heavy duty C&S fishing rig (Catch and Shoot--Browning .338 with a super duty cable tied to the gun barrel). A "C&S" rig in Kansas is pretty mild, a Winchester 94 and a catfish line.
Save some of those SnowPlow Drivers, Great White Snow Sharks and Labatt's for me.----------JCT (shark hunter/fisher). |

Hope the ice fishing is going well for you and you bring home lots of ice ......lol |

We could give your "new home" a breaking in party with some ice fishing in your backyard. Be sure to give me a shout here on the BB when you move up here and maybe we can try to hook up for some local fishing. Did you at least take some of our snow with you? <!--graemlin::D--> |

I also feel compelled to make our southern friends aware that they should come as equipped as possible. Having said that, it seems that it puts local residents at a disadvatage. Possibly a post of border crossing retailers that still offer fair prices. for both us and them. (there are plenty that don't practice this piracey) This is just an observation I've made from fishing Kingston/Gananoque, The Soo, and T Bay. |

Canadian Tire stores have a decent selection of gear that rivals prices at Wal*Mart so at least there's a bit of competition here. I always pop into Gander Mountain (Dick's), Cabela's, Scheels Sporting Goods, etc. when I go stateside to see what I can get for a better price here (usually the whole store is cheaper <!--graemlin::rolleyes:-->). I'm buying water skis when I'm in Minn. on the May 13th weekend <!--graemlin::)-->. $229.99 (without 15% taxes) here and same skis at Cabela's for $99.99. That's $265 total here and $129 total Canadian when I buy at Cabela's. No brainer!!! |

As no Walmart or Canadian Tire that I have found carries Senkos I have started making my own. Much more reasonably priced, plus I can make colour combos no one else does. |

I always like to find different lures that the fish haven't seen, these fit the bill..... They are not a flash in the pan company. they have been producing good quality tackle since the 1920's. No I don't work for them and this is not a sales pitch...lol I just like the idea of a company that sticks to its roots and has not become part of a huge conglomerate that's all all flash and marketing. If we keep these independant companies going they will always keep the big boys honest

Backup generator in place and was forced to shoot my tractor and buy a new one, (money earmarked for a new 20 horse four stroke outboard). All in all a smooth transition. Been out on Whitfish lake (2-3 times a week) and a few other small lakes in the area. I sold my boat (a fiberglass 15' with a 1961 40hp Evinrude) too hard on gas and heavy. Picked up a 14' Aluminum and a new 6hp Mercury. Easy on gas and a breeze to tow, also trolls all day without missing a beat. I find it perfect for all these small lakes. Maybe I could use the new John Deere to tow the thing....lol Now I just have to start exploring the area. Fall is just around the corner and better fishing. (it was awful hot around here in july) We should try to link up and try out a lake or or two in this area. |

Originally posted by: Norhternpike48 on 8/29/2005 4:59:36 AM Ged... Nope, not freezing yet. Just working on winter prep. Still cutting and splitting my wood to keep me warm in the comming months. Once the snow starts flying everything will shut down. Since I'm a good hour outside civilization I want to be prepared. Also, had alot of rain lately so getting out on the lake takes a little more time (uncover the boat, bailing, and clumsey rainsuits etc.) Once labour day has passed the lake will be quiet as the "seasonal" people will have closed up their cottages. Once that happens the lake will be nice and quiet again. I think W Wayne headed up to his cottage to finish off the summer before the kids hit the books. I don't think he is "online" up there. I guess the bottom line is, Once september hits the fishing will pick up again. I can resume my search for that 48" pike......... |
