I have never caught a crappie nor do I know much about them. I was at Los Voqueros Res in Livermore yesterday and my friend who is not an experienced angler at all caught what I thought was a crappie while fishing for striper with cut anchovies. My questions about if it was a crappie started as soon as I tried to grab the mouth, it was really small and did'nt open wide even after I picked it up by the lower jaw, my finger barely fit through the lips! So, it is shaped like a crappie but has a small mouth that does'nt stretch out, the lips looks kinda like a rubber lipped perch. The anal fin is shorter than the one s I've seen on pictures of crappies. The gil plate is more round instead of coming to a point. At first I thought it was a white crappie but it appears to have a more yallowish color. How ever, the dorsal fin, shape of the head, tail, and over all shpe of the fish all look like a crappie. My inexperience with any other fish aside from trout, salmon and strped bass has me guessing about this fish. Anybody got some insight? I would really appreciate it if some one could help me out, I would hate to cook this thing up and get the wrong idea about crappie. Thanks.
