Has anyone had much luck fishing on Lake Kaweah? I am big into bass fishing and here in Lemoore Ca. there is not much fishing at all. When I go to Lake Kaweah what should i be using, and how is the trout fishing?

Hey, not a big fan of Kaweah, myself. There's a few techniques I use there, when I fish it, but that's not often. There's so many better lakes around our area. BTW, I retired from the Navy in 2003 and have lived here in Lemoore for 16 years. I have a G-3 bassboat and fish quite often with my family and/or friends. My favorite bass lake is Eastman. You won't take home dinner from that lake, but I have had a couple of 100+ bass days on that lake. If you insist on fishing Kaweah for bass, my best recommendation is fishing off the rocks at the dam or along the right shoreline entering Greasy Cove. My wife and I will go through a couple of packages of baby bass colored Senkos, tossed wacky rig style. Or, we'll also toss 1/32 oz (yes, small) jigs with green grubs. You might not catch monsters using these techniques, but we're more into just having fun catching fish. I'm not that patient to toss large lures all day in the hopes of catching that one 10 pounder. Hope that helps. PM me if you're interested to going out for a day this spring on my boat. Scott

Thanks for the info. I will have to try out the other lake you mentioned. I am from SW Florida and not really use to all these small Bass LOL. I know California has big fish here but i just dont know where to look or there out of ranger for me. Went to Lake Kaweah this weekend and fished where the river meet the lake. I caught 4 keeper rainbows (first trout I have ever caught) using live worms. No bass though. I would more than happy to go fishing with you some time. Maybe you can show me a little on how fish are caught in California. You may laugh but I do not know what PM means?

OK, I'm laughing (inside), but PM means to send me a Personal Message. You would just click on my name and it will give you the ability to send me a PM. Heck, my phone number is 925-0556. Make it easier for you. I go to Key West a lot with the Navy, as I work with VFA-122. Are you in a squadron and if so, which one?

Nice to hear you caught you first trout. Look in the fly fishing section of this forum and you'll see several pics of me, my wife and daughter with very large trout, caught while fly fishing in this area. Once you go fly fishing, it's hard to go back. Very addicting. I did a lot of fly fishing the flats around Key West just last month. A riot!

Awesome, I am at FRCW 600 div. I have fly fished a few times and caught some small bass back in Florida and you are right it is fun but I had a hard time finding open areas to fish. I use baitcasting and spinning reals. Most of the bait I used in Florida has not really worked here to well but it could be due to the spots I try going to. When will you start going out on the boat? I can usually do any weekend as long as I am not on duty.

Fished Kawea this past Fri. Caught a few dink bass. Was my first time fishing this lake and my first time fishing for bass. Watermelon red/blk senkos worked well. Fished them weightless. Just twitch them and retrieve slow. Cast near visible structure. Currently, I live in San Diego but will be moving to Pville in a few months and plan to yak fish this lake a lot. By the way, I used to I use to be the Div CC for FRCW 600 a few years back. Just retired off of the RReagan. PM me if you want to fish from a Hobie. I got an extra one.

Hey, Jay, glad to hear you got a few dinks. I've had a couple of really good days on Kaweah, but that is very few and far between. Kayaking is a lot of fun, we do it every time we "det" to Key West. Fishing for saltwater fish is a blast from a yak. MWR on NAS Lemoore has several kayaks for rental that I've been eyeing for a while. We were just at Morro Bay today and watched a few kayakers out there doing some fishing. I talked to a fellow as he was loading up his yak and he gave me a few pointers if I ever decided to bring a kayak to Morro Bay. And I do plan on it some day.
