What part of CO are you looking? There are some fun ponds to fish in Denver, Littleton and Englewood. The CDOW puts a book out called Fishing Close to Home that gives a list of ponds around the metro area with a profile including types of fish and the regulations for those ponds. |

When I used to live in littleton, I picked up a copy at Gart Sports over off of Wadsworth and Bowles. I know it's a drive, but I'm sure the DOW would carry a copy up at headquarters at 6060 Broadway. They also sell it on-line. Here is their site. It looks like they're charging $7.00 for it these days. http://wildlife.state.co.us/wildlif...ductid=P07There is a pond over at progress park off belleview between Broadway and SanteFe. Chatfield ponds also offers some decent largemouth fishing. Depending on the time of year, you could fish the spillway and get into some walleye, smallmouth, channel cats and rainbow trout. Several years ago, some tiger muskie's were released in Chatfield which wasn't advertised very loudly, so if you fish Chatfield you take a chance of catching Tiger Muskies...especially if you are throwing some bass lures or large rapalas. There is also the stone house park in Lakewood which has Largemouth, Crappie and Bluegill. Good Fishing, JL |

hey JL thanks for the advice. ive fished the spillway and havent had great luck. however about a 1/2 mile down from the spillway at the dog park theres a pond. it is never fished and there are 1-2 lb smallies and largemouth along with walleye, rainbows and crappie. it is never fished . try using a small jighead with a worm. it works. try wading to the backside for bigger fish. |

Thank you for the tip. The best fishing I have had at the spillway has usually been between early March and late May. The only problem with that time frame, is that becomes elbow to elbow fishing. I've done decently for walleye using a 1/4 oz chartreuse jig head with a red eye tipped off with 1/2 of a baby crawler. I also like the same colored rattle head jigs tipped off the same way.
I now live in SE Aurora and I do a lot of fishing at Aurora Reservoir and some at Quincy. Quincy is fly and lure only, but there are some huge largemouth out there with a size limit of 18 inches or bigger. I've done pretty good along the south shore line in June using spinners and tube jigs. |

In addition to rainbow trout, you have the possibilty of catching some older brown trout. Aurora also has Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Wiper, Walleye, Crappie, Perch and Channel Catfish. Both Aurora and Quincy only allow boats with electric trolling motor. I've done decently froma belly boat too. I've done decently for walleye trolling a crawlers harness off of a 1 oz bottom bouncer. I've also caught them trolling a triple teazer off of leaded line. I've seen Wiper swimming by the boat dock in the past and they are getting huge. Unfortunately there is no fishing allowed from the boat dock there. I have yet to catch a wiper out of Aurora. I heard one fellow caught a 13 lbs wiper using a deep diving rainbow trout pattern rapala over near the diving area the year before last. JL

yeah i have heard that bottom bouncers work good but i cant get it goin fast enough in my belly boat. i have caught pike in the belly boat before and it is some fight. it was fun uintill a small one got off the hook into my lap. it was terrifying! its also scary because at 11 mile the water is so shallow for so long that you get monster pike right at your feet. but a belly boat is the only way you can access the weedy shallows. |

I have some good childhood memories of Elevenmile. Back when I was about 10 years old (back in the 80's), my Dad used to spend almost every week-end down there chasing those toothy critters with 2 lbs test line and 6 inch mister twisters. He had a couple world record attempts on 2 lbs test line with his last attempt over 12 lbs two weeks later a fellow in Canada caught an 18+ lbs pike on 2 lbs test line. I've always thought it would be fun to have a monster pike tow me around in a belly boat, That would be scary having one flopping around inside it. I've done plenty of belly boating, but have since picked up a little 11' coleman crawdad with a trolling motor and Eagle fish finder. This is one of those few boats you can take into shallow weedy areas. Unfortunately with the winds at elevenmile, I'm real reluctant to take my crawdad out there. I would say it's probably more suited for small boats like Bear Creek Lake, Quincy and Aurora that don't have big gas powered boats and are easy enough for me to get off the lake if weather turns too crazy. This next spring if you want to do some trolling give me a shout. JL |

yeah that sounds like a good time. last time i was out at elevenmile in my bellyboat my dad and I had gotten caught up in a nasty storm. on our way in all of the campers were reeling in their lines and watchin because it took us a while to paddle in. even if you wade out on the end by the dream stream you can get into pike. try using a booyah! buzzbait or a prop bait. the pike love em! and you dont get em snagged. |

I bet that was a sight. That is one lake I wouldn't want to be caught in a storm on. There a lot of boats at the bottom of that lake as a result of some of those storms. It looks like we're getting closer to ice fishing season. I was driving over the Cherry Creek Dam road this morning and noticed that parts of it were icing up. A friend of mine at work has already been out ice fishing. I need to find out how she did. |

You don't have to fish with an ice jigger to catch fish, but I prefer one over a micro fishing because I can sit a little closer to the hole and watch the fish finder.
I didn't get a chance to talk to her today. she usually fishes elevenmile, tarryall and golden gate ponds. I hope to catch her tomorrow.

It's been a few years since I've been ice fishing. The last time I ice fished, was at Aurora Reservoir when they used tio have their Fire and Ice ice fishing tournament. It was a little unnerving being out on the ice. I kept hearing pressure creaks and cracking noise. I thought for sure I was going to fall in. At least Elevenmile, Golden Gate Pond, Georgetown all ice up really thick. |

Was there any size to them? The trout I usually catch at Golden Gate ponds are stocker size, but my 5 year old and I sure have fun though. I talked to my friend. She went to Tarryall the week-end before last and said it was pretty slow. She went to Antero this last week-end and said it was slow, but the trout were pretty good size. I heard Antero has been producing some monsters lately. As soon as I get a free moment, I think I'll make my way down there. She said it was about 6 inches of ice, but the outside temp was reading -40. |

i also heard that antero was practically sub-arctic. however one of the guys out on the ice at golden gate said there was a 17 lb cutthroat or some kind of trout caught out of antero when he was there. at golden gate there were a few 13-14 inchers but mostly they were 10-12 inches. it was still alot of fun. |

In the spring try Ward Road ponds, Wheat Ridge Green Belt, Adams County Fair Grounds, Union Res. in Longmont and Bear Creek Res. in Lakewood. Most of the city lakes has bass in them just got to go after them in the sping time and learn where they hold up at. Plus if you are really wanting to truely be in a world of your own start looking at rivers ie; Yampa River and Arkansas River. I hope this will give some good ideas for some good bass fishing next year. Good luck and tight lines to you. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to one and all. |

Josh, I hope you had a Merry Christmas.
Bear Creek Lake is off Morrison Rd just east of C-470. Fishing there, you have a chance of getting into some saugeye and Tiger Muskies also. When I used to live in Morrison, I did a lot of bellyboating out there. They usually stock it pretty good with trout. Every once in a while you'll get into one with some size. There are usually a few people who ice fish out there when the conditions are right. It's been awhile since I've been out there, but the used to post the ice conditions at the gate.

I have also heard good things about bear creek. i havent been there before though. have you ever caught a muskie there? i have never caught one. however while my friend and i were trying for muskie at chatfield this summer my friend caught a 7 lb largemouth on a big spoon. it was pretty exiting. Hey Josh,
I'm sorry to hear about your grandma. I hope she gets better soon.
I've tried fishing for Tiger Muskies, but have had no luck. I remember fishing Bear Creek Lake in the summer of '99 and seeing some muskie fingerlings in the shallows by the boat ramp. Depending on the survivors in that lake, I woud imagine there are some good size ones in there.
One year I was trolling a weighted crawler harness from my boat and something ripped it right off my line. I have no doubt it was a tiger, but that is about the closest I've come. A couple years ago some students stocked some 24 inch tigers in Evergreen lake. I would think they would be getting close to keeper size too. Another place to consider for tigers also is Gross Reservoir out of boulder. I've seen reports that indicate they are getting huge there.

Josh, The next time you're at evergreen, you might try the spillway with the fly rod. I used to fish the spillway before they banned the use of bait and I used to get into browns and rainbows all the time. Cheers, Jason

Okay I forgot to also put in Smith Res. in lakewood for smallmouth bass. Baits: I like to use shad raps., black and white (or gold) jointed rapala, Spinner baits white, green, red, X-raps and spoons. Location to most of the lakes are in the Denver metro area. The Yampa River comes out of Steamboat lake and a alot of trout, smallmouth bass and northern pike are in the river as well. Arkansas River out of Pueblo Res. |

Phasewolf, I forgot about Smith Reservoir. It's been a while since I've been there. Wasn't there a state record smallmouth out of Smith at one time? The last time I was there, we got into a whole mess of Perch.
Josh, If you're in that direction, you might check out out Main lake over off of Florida and Kipling. Unfortunately this time of year it will be frozen over, and typicall they have signs telling people to stay off the ice. Likewise, in the summer they don't allow boats either. I remember back in the 70's and early 80's, you used to be able to take small boats, sail boards, canoes on to a lot of those lakes, but they don't allow boating or wading of any kind any more.
If you're up near Steamboat, you might also check out Stagecoach Reservoir. I don't think it has the bass you're looking for, but the Pike are getting huge and the the trout are pretty good size also. I've seen people do pretty good from Belly boats for both around the east side of the lake. Jason

Josh, That's a nice fish. Good thing about today's taxidermy, as long as you have a good picture and measurements, you could get a replica that looks just like the fish you caught and you can do a lot more catch and release...unless of course you're fish hungry. Jason

Jason, that is pretty cool how they can make a replica. im sure it would cost a fortune though. if it was cheap i would have consider having it done with the big channel cat i caught this summer. it was easily a lake record. its a small pond but my friend and i have pulled out some good size cats. you should check out the picture in the catfish section under my biggest channel cat ever. its not that big it was about 15 lbs but for the size of the pond it was amazing. Josh, That's a nice fish! About 8-9 years ago I won guided fishing trip to Glen Elder Kansas. It was a huge lake (about 10,000 acres). The week before we showed up the guides found 4 1/2 foot channel cat floating dead on the top of the water. I never did hear how much it weighed, but they had the head drying on a 4x4 post. I think they were going to try to have it mounted. Of course the whole trip we all hoped we would hook into something of that size and never did. We caught a bunch of cats. But nothing as nice as the one you caught. As far as cost goes, I don't think a replica costs much more than a regular mount. The last time I priced mounts, I had a friend quote me $10.50 per inch.

Happy new year Jason! i dont think im up to puting 300+ bucks for a fish. 4 1/2 feet! wow! that would be some fight! my cat was probably only 30-35 inches. the amazing part about mine was that i caught it on a micro pole because i forgot my baitcaster at home. my freind and i went nuts when we brought it in. my freind was thinking it was small uintill it surfaced. that was so exiting when i saw it. my friend was standing on the edge of the dock with the net. when i almost had it i gave it a final tug and when i heard my friend start to yell iknew i had it! that was the most exiting fishing moment of my life! What was your most exiting fishing moment? Josh |

I would be curious to find out if that 4 1/2 foot cat died of old age or choked on a smaller fish. Landing a 15 lbs cat on a micro set-up is pretty impressive.
I would have to say the incident that got me hooked on fishing, was back in 1977. I was all of 4 years old, and my Dad took my fishing at the spillway at Shadow Mountain Reservoir. He set me up next to the wall of the spillway with a nightcrawler rig and I caught a 4 lbs brown trout. I would say another good moment for me was when I caught my first keeper Walleye out of Aurora Res. There was also the time when I caught a 4 lbs rainbow out of Fall River near Estes park on my honeymoon and followed it up with a 3 1/2 lbs rainbow. As soon as I dig up some pictures, I'll put some out here. Take care, Jason |

Jason, wow! a 4 lb trout! did you catch the estes park ones on a fly? i would have to say that my biggest trout was only about 20 inches. i caught him by the loading dock at chatfield. if you want fish just go in there! i waded in right next to the dock with a crawler bit on a jghead. there are so many fish there. and they are not used to getting fished. however you have to move for all of the boats though. it is a great spot you just cant go on the dock itself. Nah, I had forgotten my fly gear at home. So, I was just tossing some Pautzke salmon eggs on a size 10 gold eagle claw hook followed 4 feet down from a size 5 split shot. The lady at Creekside Suites had been trying for weeks to catch that one and almost seemed a little pissed to see it dangling from my stringer. Cheers, Jason |

Josh, Don't count yourself the worst. I've never been real great at fly fishing either. I mostly use spinning tackle myself. I like using bait casters when I'm trolling with lead core line. Other than that I don't use them very often either. One of these days when I get a bigger boat, I might use the in conjunction with a down rigger, but then again it would still be used for trolling. Josh, A lot depends on what type of downrigger you get. The electronic downriggers are going to cost alot more than the hand crank down riggers, but would offer a lot more versatility if you are on a boat by yourself. Another thing that will affect the cost, is how much capacity the downrigger has (how many feet of cable it can handle). In the Bass Pro spring fishing catalog, the manual downriggers start at $95. The electronic ones seem to top out at $1,050. I have an old hand crank downrigger, I bought an old hand crank downrigger off my dad when he sold his boat, but I just haven't had time to mount it on to my boat. If you are considering buying a downrigger in the future, you'll want to count in the cost for a weight and depending on the package you buy, you might need to get a mounting base as well. I haven't price weights in a long time and the catalog I have doesn't seem show them. The bases I've seen seem to run from $25 to $85. Jason

Josh, If you ever decide to get a boat, You'll also want to keep in mind that to meet minimum safety requirements before your boat is allowed on the water you'll need to think about things like life jackets, sound device, oars (in-case your trolling battery goes dead or motor gives out), if you have a gas motor on your boat regulations require that you keep fire extinguisher on board. It can add up, but once you meet all the minimum reuirements it's not so bad. If you have a gas powered motor on your boat, the gas can add up. When I used to do a lot of belly boating, I had a Fish-n buddy fish finder. The only disadvantage, was that the feed I would get was slow. It didn't have a great power to pixel ratio. I imagine today there are probably some good models out there. When buying one, you want to make sure you have plenty of power per the amount of pixels displayed on your screen if you want a fast read. Jason

Josh, Good luck to you. Be careful out there. I'll be working on organizing my garage tomorrow so I can get to my boat easier. I have to take advantage of the good temps to work on my garage. I need to finish insulating and hanging peg board. If I don't get it done this winter, then I'll have to spend part of my spring or summer. I just renewed my small game/fishing combo license today. So as soon as I get done with the house projects and honey do list from my wife, I'll be able to get some fishing in. Jason

Josh, I can't say I've ever caught bass through the ice. For small game, I usually hunt rabbits. I haven't done too bad up near the northwest part of the state. This next year, I'm going to try my hand at grouse hunting. There is a place up near the flat tops where I've gone elk hunting that I;ve seen plenty of Blue Grouse. When my grandfather passed away, he left me his old bolt action .410 that he used to go grouse hunting with. I'm really dating myself here, I took the hunter safety course back when I was 14 years old over at Dave Cook's when Bear Valley Mall and Dave Cook's used to exist. If I remember right the cousre didn't cost more than $15 and that included book and materials. I'm not sure what the price would be today, but most places like Gander Mtn, Sportsman's Warehouse etc probably play host to the hunter's safety course. If you go online to the DOW's web-site http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting...Education/ they probably have a list of course they offer on-site. If you call them, they could probably give you locations where the course is held. When I took the course, the last evening of the course was reserved for the test followed by a shooting test in which they provided the gun and ammo. Getting started, you could probably get into a used .22 pretty cheap. Anymore, I would recommend going with a licensed dealer because they can usually vouch for the condition of the gun and you know for sure you are not buying a gun that was used in a crime. If you buy one from a private party, get a receipt with the previous owners name and address or phone number. I was fortunate in that almost all of my firearms were inherited. Bullets can get pricey especially big game bullets, but .22 bullets aren't too expensive. Besides your cold weather gear, the only other thing you'll need to get started is a blaze orange vest and hat. You can get into a cheap plastic vest to start anyware from $1.00 to $5.00 and a hat shouldn't cost much more. If you watch the clearance at Wal-mart this time of year, you might bet able to get into a nicer vest at a reasonable price. Cherry Creek State park has a shooting range (unfortunately you have to pay a park fee to get into the park then you have to pay a fee to use the range. Depending on the time of year, you could always target practice at Byers Canyon near Kremmling which is run by the state and doesn't cost a thing but gas to get up there. My family and I usually stop there on our way up to out hunting spot when we go deer hunting. If you take your fishing poles, Williams Fork is close by too and has some world class pike and some nice size Kokanee. Let me know if you need anymore info on getting started hunting. Jason |

Jason, i got skunked. My buddies caught a few dinker perch. At least now we know that its a bad idea. thanks for the hunting advice. i think i have a 22 and a shotgun around here somewhere. We used to live in sedalia which is by Castle Rock so we shot magpies from ouf front porch. they would get in our garbage. are you going to the sportsmans expo in a few week. i want to, it is a good time. Hey guys I would like to know if anyone is interested in fishing for pike? If so could we possibly plan a trip to a lake some what close to Denver metro area? Or we could plan for Williams Fork Res., Eleven Mile Res., Spinney Mountain Res., or another lake that would be good for pike. Just post your answer so I can get an idea of what kind of fishing ya'll like. As for for me if it swims I want to catch it. |

Josh, I'm planning on going Saturday the 26th. I'm going to try to get a good friend of mine to come along. He's the friend of mine that does taxidermy work.
Phasewolf, I would love to do some pike fishing this spring. Unfortunately my boat isn't built to handle the temperment of those lakes.
I finally dug up a few photos. I've got more scattered around somewhere.

Josh, It sounds like Christmas worked out well for you. The expo wasn't bad. It really hasn't changed much since the last time I went down there, except all of the big game hunting trips to Canada seem to be about twice as as expensive. I got to renew my NRA membership. I learned a new way to try fishing Tazmanian Devil lures which is good since I have a nearly a full tackle box of them. And I got a new T-Shirt that says PETA - People Eating Tasty Animals and on the back it says "All God's critters look best next to the mashed potatoes and gravy". I'm tempted to walk around Boulder with it on and see how many people I offend. Take care, I hope the fishing finds you well. Jason |

Josh, I can't say I hate them, but I hate it when they impose their misguided belief system on me and my rights as a gun owner and hunter. I could never see myself living the vegetarian lifestyle. I'll take some good venison steaks, fresh walleye or elk burgers any day. I hear you on the fishing tackle. I've been good lately. I'm trying to keep my eyes open for a boat on craigslist I like...which means I have to be real limited on what I spend my money on right now. Take care, Jason

Josh, I'm trying to keep it in the $2000 range. I want to teach my wife how to water ski, so I'm looking for something that can at least get up to 40 mph on the lake and yet still have enough room to fish off of. Unfortunately my coleman crawdad only has enough room me and one other person and wasn't built for high speeds or big motors. I'm in a waiting patern at the moment though. I had to take my ford Exploder to the shop for coolant leak. I'm afraid it's probably the water pump. As soon as I find out how much that will cost me I can start setting up times to go look at some of the boats I've seen on craigslist. Jason

Josh, I got my exploder back from the shop Monday. I lucked out that it wasn't the water pump. I had two leaks 1 because of a warped thermostat housing and the other was a leak in the valve near the heater core, so I escaped only having to pay $500. That sounds like a lot, but I have no doubt a water pump would have cost me a lot more. I would say stay away for the 1999 to 2002 ford exploder. The transmissions are lousy. I've had to have mine replaced twice. I was only lucky that I had an extended warranty on it when I did. It might cost you more, but you might look at Toyota. If you can finance something new all the better. Consumer Reports gave the Tundra and the Tacoma awesome ratings across the board. If you know your Dad took good care of the Jeep, then I would consider the Jeep. I also don't recommend buying used 4x4's from dealerships unless they can provide you a carfax report. I don't know how common it is, but places like Budget rent-a-car will sell their used rental vehicles and I know for a fact when people rent 4X4's they put some serious abuse on them. Stay away from rentals if you can help it. If you can get something new then I really recommend looking at consumers report vehicle guide. You might even be able to access it on line for a fee. Good Luck, Jason

Hey Josh, How's fishing been? The couple of weeks have been extremely busy at work, so I haven't done much myself. I probably should start a new topic on the forum since this one doesn't talk about the bass fishing much anymore. What do you think? Have you noticed there isn't a lot of activity on the colorado forum? I'm also a life member of the North American Hunting Club and there seems to be a lot more topics being discussed and participation on that site. I've been trying to stay active on this site in hopes that encourages more discussion. Anyway, I hope all is well, Jason

Josh, Sorry about the late reply, I'm in the middle of wrapping up month-end at work. I should be finished by sometime tomorrow afternoon. I missed the classic. My wife, son and I went to the Home & Garden show. It looks like I'll get to spend the boat money on a patio this spring. We found about 16 contractors to get estimates from either on concrete or pavers...mostly pavers. It looks like we'll have to wait for the income tax refund before we pick out a boat. Inoticed this week Cherry Creek reservoir is starting to thaw off pretty good. Which means it probably won't be long until Aurora reservoir thaws off. I'm starting to camping reservations booked for the family. Memorial Day week-end we're going up to Shadow Mtn Reservoir hopefully we'll get into some Kokanee and Browns. Unfortunately it sounds the beetle kill took a toll on the trees in that area. We're also looking at taking some trips to Bear Lake near Yampa and Silver Jack Reservoir near Montrose are good places to camp. You just have to be extra careful of Bears near silver jack. Take care, Jason

neilpete, What part of sout/southeast are you looking? What kind of fishing do you plan on doing? I've heard Pueblo Reservoir is an awesome place for Wipers and Walleye. I don't know if you know who Russ Moran was, but he was an old time bass fisherman who was on the cover of Time Magazine a few decades ago for his bass fishing expertise. He was a fantastic fisherman and an all around good guy. Before he passed away he moved down to Pueblo and loved fishing that place if it's any testimony to the fishing there.
I'm not terribly familiar with the Nee Noshe, Nee Grande etc, but they are in the south east part of the state, but I've read they have a pretty good Saugeye population. Wish I could be of more help, but to be honest I don't make it down there very often these days. Good Fishing, Jason

Josh, That sounds like a good plan. Good time of year to get into pike. Let me know how you do. It might thaw sooner than you think. The wind up there will help thaw that lake just as well as warm weather. I drove by Quincy Reservoir the other day and it's thawing out pretty good. It shouldn't take much longer for it to thaw out. Cherry Creek is almost completely thawed off. I'm going to drive out to Aurora Reservoir tomorrow and see what the conditions are. As soon as the ice thaws at Aurora and Quincy, the rangers will drop their boats in the water and then open it up to other boats. I'll also be making a trip out to Bass Pro tomorrow. One of my walleye rods got caught in the door jam on my truck, so it's time to get a new one. I know years ago, Elevanmile used to have a Mackinaw population, but you just don't hear much these days. If it still has Mackinaw, you would probably have a good chance of getting into them too at ice out. It's one of the few times of the year, Mackinaw will venture out of the deep and cruise the shallows for smaller fish. Good Fishing, Jason

Hey Josh,
It's not the first time I've lost a fishing pole that way. I guess it's just the odds of several years of fishing. I went out to Aurora to check out the conditions and it was still mostly frozen. There was a little open water in front of the dam and handicap pier. I would say it's at least another 2 weeks until it's thawed. Good fishing, Jason |

Josh, I haven't been over that way for a while. I did go by Quincy the other day, and all of the lake visible from the road was thawed, however the water level was very low. Usuualy the city of Aurora will buy water to pump in, but I bet with all the snow this year up in the hills they're probably waiting to see what the run off does.I'm still keeping an ear out for Aurora Reservoir. I'm anxious to get my boat on the lake this year. If I hear anything on the west Chatfield ponds, I'll let you know.Jason

Jason, i went to some bass pond today and caught a couple of small largemouth. tomorrow im going to fish the restricted loading docks at chatfield. im sure since theres no boats we can get away with it. a worm on a jighead just kills out there. ive caught some 1-2 lb smallmouth and largemouth bass and some 20 -22 inch rainbows from by that dock. you arent allowed on the dock however if you wade in from the ramp and flip it next to the dock the fish are totally unfished and hungry as can be. ill tell you if i get anything good tomorrow. Josh, Those are some nice fish. It's always fun getting into a mess of crappie and bluegill. Nice cat and bass. I've been driving out to Aurora, Reservoir after work this week. When I checked, it was almost completely thawed off except for the marina bay and the bay across from the boat ramps. I bet in a week or so, they'll start allowing boats on the lake. Unfortunately, I'm on call this week at work so I won't be able to get out there to do any fishing this week. I'm ready to get out there though. I picked up a new shimano fishing rod at sportsman's warehouse for $100, but at least it has a lifetime warranty if it breaks. It's the only brand sportsman's warehouse will replace on site as long as you have your receipt. Good luck at Chatfield, I look forward to hearing the report. Jason

jason, it's always fun getting a new pole. i hope it works out well for you. chatfield was kind of lame. they just put the docks in the water so there wasnt too many fish. i had one on with a dropshot worm but he broke me in the rocks. but redstone, my pond is supposed to open up in april. redstone is a pond that is just filled with trout, bass, crappie, bluegill and about 100 channel cats. only about 15 are over 5 lb though. however ive pulled out a few over 10 lb. and as a plus the fish there are half braindead and will bite nearly anything you throw at them. and it is right next to my house. if we get skunked at chatfield we will go to redstone to get on the board. it is a fun little pond to fish. Josh, I went out to Aurora Reservoir about 1/2 hour before they closed last night and talked to one of the rangers. Even though it looked like the lake was thawed off completely, he said there were still some large ice chunks floating around back in the Lone Tree bay and Senac Cove...both of which you can't see from the parking lot. He said it might be about a week before they open it up to boats, but said they're busy talking over preventative measures for zebra mussels, so that might put another delay on boats. If that happens, I might have dust off my belly boat. I assured him, I haven't had my boat on Pueblo Reservoir (Where the zebra mussels were found in CO). Redstone sounds like a fun pond. There is another pond like that up in Thornton in the Hunter's Glen subdivision. I wouldn't mind getting into a mess of good size crappies. They're pretty tasty. I'm sure Chatfield will pick up eventually. It always does. Take care, Jason

Josh, Zebra mussels cause a whole bunch of problems from eating up the plankton resources in a lake to clogging up drainages to polluting reservoirs. Here is an article on them if you would like some reading material. Zebra Mussels Zebra mussels are a huge pest accidentally brought into the Great Lakes, possibly on the hulls or in the ballast water of vessels from Europe, which has been plagued by zebra mussels for centuries. A temperate, freshwater species, zebra mussels have spread to many other lakes and rivers in the US and Canada. Prodigious eaters, they filter out nearly all the phytoplankton (and small zooplankton) in the 15-40 micrometer size. By removing most of the food for microscopic zooplankton and filter feeders, which in turn support larval and juvenile fishes and other animals, zebra mussels can effectively starve the native populations of infested lakes and rivers. Lakes that were full of phytoplankton before zebra mussel infestation are devoid of the algae afterwards. Zebra mussels were first discovered in 1988 in Lake St. Clair, a small lake between Lake Erie and Lake Huron. Their free-swimming, nearly invisible larvae, called veligers, may have been discharged from the ballast water of one or more transoceanic ships in 1985 or 1986. Since then, they have spread almost to New England, and states are working feverishly to educate boaters so the mussels don't spread farther. Within two to three weeks, the veligers "settle" and attach by strong byssus threads to hard surfaces such as rock, wood, glass, rubber, fiberglass, metal, gravel, and native mussels. They grow best in areas of free-flowing water where they can filter out large quantities of plankton. Colonies of zebra mussels may accumulate and clog water-intake pipes and screens of drinking water facilities, industrial facilities, power generating plants, golf course irrigation pipes, cooling systems of boat engines, and boat hulls. Zebra mussels grow rapidly to about thumbnail size, mature within a year, and reproduce prolifically. An adult female can produce 30,000-100,000 eggs each year! Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) are native to eastern Europe, having existed there long before industrialization. There, people building factories and other facilities just take them into account and design ways to work around them, For example, a designer may build facilities with two sets of pipes so one set can be closed off when it becomes fouled. The clean one takes over while the other is de-musseled. In western Europe, where zebra mussels have been around for 200 years, diving ducks have made them an important part of their diet. Besides clogging pipes and devouring most of the available microscopic food supply, zebra mussels may present a health hazard by increasing human and wildlife exposure to organic pollutants such as PCBs and PAHs. Studies have shown that zebra mussels can accumulate the pollutants in their tissues in concentrations 300,000 times greater than in the environment. They deposit these pollutants as pseudofeces, loose pellets of mucous mixed with particulate matter that they filter from the water. Scavenging animals that eat the pseudofeces may pass these pollutants up the food chain. When the zebra mussels coat bathing beaches, the sharp-edged mussels cut the tender feet of swimmers. Trace the invasion of zebra mussels in the U.S., and predict their next attack! 1. Discuss the history of zebra mussels and their impact on humans and the food chain. 2. Trace by satellite the route by which zebra mussels came into the Great Lakes on the hulls of commercial vessels. 3. The Zebra Mussel Range Map is prepared by the New York Sea Grant Program. It is updated about every 3-4 months to report new sightings. Using the map from May, 1995, connect the round dots and bold lines which indicate the locations of zebra mussel sightings. Shade in the infested areas. How far South have zebra mussels spread? How far North? East? West? Have they reached New England? What infested body of water is closest to Maine? Once they are introduced into a body of water on boat hulls or in ballast water, how can they spread? (by floating downstream, free-swimming veligers, by attaching to something else and being carried) 4. Find the small lake called Lake St. Clair between Lake Erie and Lake Huron, where zebra mussels were first sighted in the US. Using an atlas to determine scale, calculate how far zebra mussels have spread in a decade. 5. The spread of the zebra mussels may be limited by water temperature. Zebra mussels don't do well where average summer temperatures are above 81oF (27oC) and where average summer temperatures are below 54oF(12oC). Females spawn when water temperatures get above 54oF. Using an infrared satellite image showing water temperatures in late summer (at their peak), predict which areas might manage to evade zebra mussel infestation. Tracking phytoplankton decline Lake Erie was one of the first places infested by zebra mussels. Adult zebra mussels were discovered there in 1988, so they may have been present since 1986. Examine CZCS images of the Great Lakes to determine the amount of phytoplankton in 1985. Examine a SeaWIFS image of the area today and discuss the change over the last ten years. Trying to control zebra mussels Find out more about the techniques that are being used to get rid of these animals. Chlorine has worked effectively to kill zebra mussels, but it also harms everything else, so alternatives more benign to the ecosystem are being explored. See the bibliography for places to contact for more information. Duck migration on the Great Lakes may be changing as a result of the increase in food supply. How could you research whether or not this is happening? Mussel observations For obvious reasons, it is illegal to transport zebra mussels over state lines, so you can't study them directly (except their empty shells), but you can examine blue mussels which have a similar physiology. Blue mussels are not the pests their cousins are. Examine live blue mussels to get an idea of what zebra mussels look like. Zebra mussels are smaller, and as their name suggests, variegated in color. Discuss why you can not buy live zebra mussels in Maine. Aliens in the environment According to a 1993 study, at least 4,500 non-indigenous species have set up residence in the United States. Fifteen percent of these cause severe harm, ranging from the displacment of native species to the destruction of habitat to an estimated $97 billion economic impact in market losses and pest control costs between 1906 and 1991. Research other creatures (plants and animals) that have been introduced accidentally into New England habitats and how they have affected the environment (for example, feather grass Phragmites, the gypsy moth, a seaweed known as "deadman's fingers" Codium fragile tomentoides, the common periwinkle Littorina littorea, etc.) Discuss means by which this problem could be averted or reduced (including more stringent national laws, better regulatory coordination among states, and environmental education about the potential dangers of importing non-native species). Hey Josh, I went out to Aurora, Res a couple Sundays ago. It was non-stop trout action. Trolling different spoons. My friend Johnny caught a 4 lbs Rainbow. The smallest one we caught was 15 inches. I'm stuck working today, but I'm hoping to get everything done in time to head back out to Aurora, Reservoir tomorrow. I hope fishing is going good for you. Jason

Josh, Let me know how you do out there. My family is taking a break this week-end from settling my father-in-law's estate. We're going camping up to Shadow Mountain Reservoir. I'm looking forward to actually catching some trout and maybe kokanee. How's your elbow doing? Jason

Hey Josh,
We just got back from Shadow Mtn. It was a little slower than normal, but we actually got a little snow Saturday. I ended up catching 5 suckers, 2 browns, 2 kokanee and 5 rainbows. Of course I didn't keep the suckers. What surprised me, was that I caught both of my kokanees on rainbow colored powerbait. My camera is packed away. As soon as I dig it out, I'll send picktures of the fish I caught. How did Chatfield go? Jason

Josh, Good job! I wish I would have gotten into more kokanee. I'm trying to upload some photos but this site is telling me the file size is too large even though I'm nowhere near the size limit. As soon as I get this site to cooperate, I'll send some photos.
