OU--What specific fish are you looking for in them lakes?? If you are looking for warm water species you won't find them at that altitude. Blue Mesa Has a variety of fish> Kokes, Macks(LT),Perch and others> Take care and good fishin to ya!

Thanks for the info on Blue Masa, but the question was why are they not at the higher altude, I am thinking it must be the altude, not the water Temp.

Tomy knowledge, there's warm water fish and cold water fish. Species like bass and catfish need warmer water temps before they'll move into the shallows to spawn. And I think there's something to do with the amount of oxygen in the water. That's why trout do better with more current in the lakes. Some species can be found in both kinds of water.

ou, sometimes in the higher altitude lakes there can be great pike and muskie fishing. for example elevenmile and spinney both have fantastic pike fishing and there are muskie in a few mtn lakes like evergreen.

The higher the altitiude the colder the water.  So the warm water fish such as catfish. largemouth, ec... can't survive.  About mid altitude you might find some smallmouth bass.  Then cold water fish at hgher elevations such as trout, char, etc...

Examples (I am from Utah so I will use lakes that I know):

    Low elevation lakes/reservoirs:

Utah lake- walleye, white bass, panfish, lmbass, catfish

willard bay- walleye, wipers, lm bass, crappie, catfish

    mid elevation lakes:

Pineview reservoir- tiger muskie, yellow perch, bullhead catfish, crappie, lm bass smallmouth bass, some trout

Jordanelle reservoir- yellow perch, smallmpouth bass, mountain white fish, brown and rainbow trout

Starvation reservoir- Walleye, perch, smbass, trout

high elevation lakes(ie uintas)-all lakes will have either brook trout, rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, or grayling

Strawberry reservoir- rainbow and cutthroat trout

    I hop this helps.

Because the Colorado division of wildlife manages for trout only on the grand mesa and most other high altitude lakes.
Watch the sunrise for it could be your last!
