Was getting ready to head down to Salamonie Lake State park for Labor day weekend bringing the boat with me and camp for 3 nights. Anyone got any hints on where to get away from the boats and catch fish? What is the best species of fish to catch in the lake, what bait/ tackle to use, how deep all that good stuff to make it a good fishing weekend. I only have a 14' v- bottom but, it gets me where I need to go and catches me more fish then I would have standing on shore lol! Eric Smith

Hey I had to create a new username for some reason. Well I had a blast there at Salamonie being labor day weekend the lake was pretty rough so I decided to take my lil jon boat down the river. Glad I did try the river I had great success catching white crappie and white bass trolling with jig. Had to have cought atleast 50-60 fish in 2 days of fishing tried in the lake cought one white bass lol. |

hey thanks ya i have been up there these past few weekends fishing in the river has been slow now im looking for a new place to find them. Now are you talking about fishing the dam on the lake side or on the tailwaters where the water shoots out? I have fished where the water shoots out on shore or standing on the bolders in the water there are many diffrent fish there but, its just not fun to me catching fish there I like to find them in the boat. Where are all the big cats there? Thanks,

Thanks for the tips i'll give it a shot what you using for bait there? The 3 baits I use usually in the rivers and lakes around here are nightcrawlers, live or dead chubs, and chicken liver. I wouldn't mind getting out there one more time before I put up the boat myself. Thanks,

Glad to hear your trip atleast wasn't a waste nothing like getting skunked! Yeah now would be a good time when they shut off the water from the dam to fish there where the spillway is you have to walk down all those steps. Fish from the shore very low tech methods give everything a shot worms, chicken liver, minnows, and crawdads put the river sinker on and throw er out and watch the line. I am amazed of the variety of species that hold up in those waters we have caught fresh water drum, walleye, rock bass, catfish, carp, crappie and according to my friend many, many, ,many years ago they caught huge paddlefish before they became on the endangered list. Thanks,

Hey guys, hows it going? Personally I've never fished Salamonie but have been to Huntington lake roush a few times. Many people talk about good crappie fishing at Salamonie and with all the flooded timber there its not hard to believe.
As for the catfish if you have a sonar/ fish finder and can locate the river channel that runs through the lake I'm sure you could get some whopper catfish there. I know at lake Roush in Huntington you can catch a lot of fish of different species if you can fish along one of the old roads that they flooded. I understand that theres supposed to be an entire town in there somewhere..lol.. but I'm not sure where it is... Good luck fishing spring is right around the corner. Jeff from Decatur. |
