Originally posted by: Creel Limit Zero on 8/3/2005 1:49:27 PM I've never fished for carp before, but I know Loch Raven Reservoir has some huge 20 pound carp in there, in fact, that's all you seem to see. It also is very good for bass, pike, and pickerell. There are also alot of good cat fish rivers. Potomac is very good, and there are always a chance for the 40 pounder there. As for other big game, in March you have to fish the Potomac up by Fletcher's Boat House in DC. Shouldn't be more than a 50 mile drive, but worth no matter how far you have to drive. Several reasons for that, but the main reason is the chance to pull a 40-50 pound rockfish out of a river. Usually you have to be trolling at 40-60' below the surface of the Chesapeake to pull these, and rarely get that after June. The rockfish come up the river to spawn, and get locked in right there in DC just past Fletcher's. The dam is there, so they can't go any further. You can't keep them, but what a fight. You won't be pulling one of these in on your light tackle. <!--graemlin::cool:-->
Also, if you have your own boat, there are some great fishing opportunities for rockfish up in the flats in September. Nothing of the 40 pound class, but you roam around looking for dropping/swooping seagulls. This is where rockfish are feasting on bait fish, and the seagulls are swooping down and eating fish parts off the surface. You can cast almost anything into this mess and pull fish out of it. Another great fishing opportunity. Unfortunately, I only have a small jon boat, so I can't hit this opportunity.
As for patuxent for trout, good fishery, trout is excellent in the catch and release area year round, and good after stocking in the other areas. It sounds to me like you will be really close to the catch and release area.
I'm always up for Loch Raven, will email you in September if you are interested. |

Not sure what patterns are good, don't do too much after June, but when I do I usually use some kind of terrestrial, like an ant or greenie weenie. Once in a while if I see alot of beetles or grasshoppers, I will tie one of those on, but usually like to keep to the smaller stuff. Will try to email you later on in the week. |
