Welcome back to MN, tough age for your son to be changing his whole life around, hope he is adjusting well, I'm in the Litchfield area, fish mostly Koronis and Rice in the Paynesville area. August is a busy month for me, getting a 20year old off to England for a year of study abroud and a 21 year old graduated in Dececember and into the world of work and responsibillity(paying off those school loans). FALL is just around the corner, great fishing, hunting, cooler temps and NO bugs, maybe try and get together, haven't done any longer distance travel this year, just don't feel the need to make the oil companies any richer. Again, WELCOME back to MN!!

Something to add, go to http://www.lakestatefishing.com and log in and make contact with fellow sportspersons there. I'm my4x4yj there, what I used to be here,  by far more MN info put up and hashed around there than here, this NAFC forums page use has really declined since the change over to the new style.

Are there any of you members here in Minnesota who would be interested in going walleye fishing. Rally would like someone who knows the area lakes will furnish boat and bait if anyone interested.

I live in Elk River.  I have only lived here for 5 years and have a wife a 1 year old boy and a 3 year old boy so I havent goten out fishing much the last few years.  My father in law has a cabin on a lake near Milacs. So I get a little fishing in there but thats about it.   Would love to find a lake around here that I could fish.  Havent heard to many good things about Big lake.  I have ice fished eagle lake a couple times and did ok  caught a couple crappies  and sunnys.  I use to be into fishing alot more when I was a kid.  Hunting is more my passion now but still love to go fishing in the spring and erly summer.  Seems like after the 4th of July we cant catch squat on my father inlaws cabin.

If you can tell me the lake near Mille Lacs that you're on I MAY be able to give you some pointers.

Most lakes around the Twin Cities get a lot of boat traffic....but that doesn't mean you can't get fish....you just have to adjust your tactics a little.

Or maybe fish the rivers there.

The cabin is on Little White fish lake.  Its just north of the Milacs casino about 3 miles just on the west side of 169.   We catch pan fish, bass and a few good size northerns but thats about it .  I have caught one walleye thats it.  I wish I could figure out how to catch walleyes on this lake.  Also I wish we could figure out how to catch more fish in the later summer.   Seems like after the 4th of July the fishing really dies off and dosent pic up again till spring.

I hope I don't offend you by doing this...but take a look at the lake specifics on the Minn DNR page for this lake....and tell me why your walleye catch rate is so low...

The DNR told my father inlaw that there were more walleyes in that lake per square foot than milacs.  Looks like he was a big fat lier.   I would have to say that the numbers on that page match up with the fish we catch.  We catch alot of cappies, sunnys, bass and northern  are there but not a ton.  I would have to say the bow fin numbers I think are higher than noted we kill every one of those things we catch the same with the bull heads and carp.  I still wish we could find more fish in the later summer mounths.

    Good read

There's a couple of things you are missing on this lake though

First off....at roughly 700 acres (about a square mile)...this lake can EASILY be fished down by "meat eaters"...which can keep populations of eater fish like walleye low. In the Midwest....there are SEVERAL small lakes that get pounded by experienced anglers who KNOW where AND how to catch them.

At the same time, there are several cabins on the lake...AND a resort....so that also plays into your situation.....since there CAN be a lot of pleasure craft on the water during the day.

Pike ARE a good eat...especially in the 3 - 5 lb range....just watch for the bones.

I CAN give you some pointers about after July...the biggest thing you are dealing with is water temp. That said, you will have to fish deeper...or in THICK weeds to find fish.

If you PM me....I will give you a few other tips about this
