Has anyone tried this thing? Dick's has them on clearance for $50, both the rod mount and wrist mount versions. Almost cheap enough to buy on a whim as a toy to play with, but then again I don't want to waste my time....seems gimmicky. TC

    What’s happenin’, T.C.1?

I’ve seen those things around on eBay, and have almost bought one.  If you get one and try it out, let me know how well (or not) it works.

Ahh...feeling like doo-doo. I think I got a touch of food poisoning from one of my favorite steak houses (Longhorn) this weekend. Sure was good going down....but not coming up. I DID get out into Indian Creek here behind the house to test out the SmartCast today. I can say with certainty that it WORKS! Since it is a simple sonar with no gray scale (black only), I had a hard time distinguishing what may have been trash on the bottom and what was signal disruption. With practice, I assume that I will get better at recognizing what is what. It did pick up a few fish, but you do not get any indication of size. And you really get no idea of what bottom material is or what fish are holding on the bottom. But for $50....what the heck, right? Neat little toy, and I think that there is definitely some good application. Imagine finding suspended fish around docks or off rip rap dams..... Whenever we get together, I will bring it along so you can play with it. Surely a grayscale version is possible for future models. That would be even better! A bigger LCD would be nice too to increase the resolution. BTW....deepest spot in the famous pool here...12'. Typical deep was 9'. Average across the pool is probably 5'. LTR, Shane

I hope you’re feeling better.  My wife and daughter have been a bit under the weather, but we think that’s related to allergies.

Regarding the sonar; That sounds pretty cool!  I’ll have to cruse on out to eBay and see if I can get a good price on one!

    Get Well!

ive used one several times it is does ok  naturally it is not top of the line but it does show depth and marks fish although you cannot tell the size. for 50.00 and if you have nothing better it will serve your purpose. however it does take special batteries and they are not cheap. i think they are 5-7 dollars aoiece. but they do last a good long time if you remember to turn them off or even better take them out in between use
