Go West!
I live in Reno, and there are many, many streams in Nevada that hold trout. Closest to the Reno area would be the Truckee River. Starting at the Cali border and continuing east until the Truckee and I 80 intersect is called trophy point. It is a flyfishing paradise. I belive the regs are a max of 2 trout over 14 inches and they must be caught on a barbless hook and artificial lure/bait. (Also blindfolded with 1 arm tied behind your back) But I've heard of 6 lb'ers being pulled out. From the I-80/ Truckee river intersection all the way down to the west side of Reno, theres a good mix of stocked and wild trout. 5 fish max any size no hook or bait restrictions. Verdi is a wonderful spot to fish because of the amout of water. The Trucke zigs and zags sharply through this area which produces opportunity after opportunity without having to relocate every half hour. The spring runoff is beginning so the fishing may slow down for the next few weeks, but I highly recommend it.
Now go South!
The Carson and Walker Rivers are about 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes south. 2 weeks ago I pulled a 14 inch native rainbow out of the carson. (Google it and look for "Washoe Rd" South of Gardnerville where the Carson and hwy 395 almost meet) There's plenty of fishing on that stretch and easily accessble by vehicle. If you continue to the rest area (bathrooms are located there as well) you can hike back into some water with much less pressure. Even further south is the East Walker. I've never fished it but I have heard some really good things about the area.
East:
Pyramid is reporting 20 to 50 fish PER Angler. Note: Pyramid is a tough lake to "eyeball" so go with someone that has fished it or do some research PRIOR to going. Also, since it is on Paiute land, you will need to purchase a Reservation Pass from the tavern or next to the Rangers station.
Northern Nevada is an outdoorsmans paradise. California is really close and offers some wonderful lake and river fishing for almost all types of species. My first year in the area was spent fishing Cali but because of the out of state fee's, I have dedicated this year to sniffing out some great spots.
If your running low on tacke, see the Reno Fly shop or the Sportsmans Warehouse, they'll give you the latest reports. Also check out Cabela's in Verdi, and coming soon, Shiels by I-80 and the Marina in Sparks.
Hope this helps....
