PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Keep your goldfish in the bowl.

That's the warning from Rhode Island's Department of Environmental Management.

The agency has issued emergency regulations banning the use of goldfish as freshwater bait.

While goldfish make good pets, environmental experts say they're an invasive species. Goldfish compete with native fish for food and habitat.

The Rhode Island regulations don't prevent homeowners from stocking enclosed ponds with goldfish.
