I am interested in learning the in's and out's of tiger musky fishing. Anyone willing to take a first time musky fisherman out. I do not own a boat at this point but would be willing to help offset the cost of a trip to pineview. newton, or other. Also I may need to stock up on proper equipment so any tips would be helpful.

Yep I'd take ya out to catch these critters.

Only problem is I'm in NY
But if you can find a lake in Utah that has tigers and you can either rent or find a canoe or rowboat to use I might be able to give you some pointers to hook one. Although the biggest or largest to date that I've caught was landed from shore.

Thanks Wellsley. I appreciate your help. Most of what I know about these critters I have gotten from the mag. We do have a few waters here that carry tigers. most notably pineview res. I Could fish from shore but my problem is not knowing where to look for them at during each season, Thats why I am hoping a local member may be able to assist with this. I do have my fathers old aluminum 14' but I need to get it pulled out of the back field and replace the tires and make sure the ouboard is in working order plus get a fuel tank and line (its been stored for quit a while) I have been pretty busy and also strapped for $. I guess I need to get my butt in gear and do this soon. I will definalty start asking some question and reading the musky forum more.

    Your welcome Brian

From pic's of pineview I see it has islands if you can get yourself to the outside of these islands in about 8' to 15'FOW. I also see it has perch in there. So check you states regs. to see if you can catch perch and use them for bait. If so catch some perch and put them under a float 3' to 4'. I use a 4/0 livebait hooked through the lips and a 3/0 treble on a 6" steel leader attach the steel leader to the snap swivel of the main line and the treble back on the perch before the tail. I use a baitcaster and just leave the clicker on and the spool free. Just put it in a rod holder and forget it. If you use a spinning rod you can just loosen up the drag so it doesn't take off with your rod and reel. If you can't get out on the water your next best place would be a sharp point. If there is a point that leads to a shallow bay that would be a good place to start. First light in the morning to about 8am is the best time.

Well first of all wellsley no live bait allowed in UT. Sorry about that. But dead minnows are ok. That is a nice tiger you have there!!!   Now Brian I did catch a tiger last year on Newton. I was using a three inch plastic grub bounced off the bottom. Was getting the tick tick from the perch and then WHAM!!!! I caught a really nice tiger. I got it to the surface and went now what do I do with this!!! Just before I could net it, it rolled and snapped my 8 lb line. I was fishing from an inflatable pontoon. Perch colors are really good too.  If you have a way to get out I can go out with you to try for some more.  Newton is a lot smaller than Pineview so a little easier to fish, but hey anywhere that has fish I am willing to go to.  haven't fished Pineview since hard deck.

Well OK no live bait. The lure that has caught me the most tigers is a Rapala Husky Jerk in Gold color. If your near cabela's I'm sure they have one. The biggest tiger I've caught was with a Mepps timberdoodle in firetiger. (and it was caught from shore) 42" 20lbs 8oz

That wham from the hit of a musky is what makes it so addicting. I hope you guys hook up and catch some tigers. Good Luck. I headed out for tigers next week if I get some I will post some pic's. I'll be trying to get my wife and nephew their first.

Thanks Wellsley.  utah in my opinion has some strange reg's No live fish for bait but you can use dead perch or their parts on a few waters. no corn or hominey as bait and a few other regs. But then again we also benefit from a year round fishing season in general with a few waters being closed at certain times of year, mostly to protect spawning native cutthroat trout..  I appreciate your willingness to help out. also thank you to Albino trout.

Hi Robert. welcome to the forum and thanks for the invite. Saturday I have put together a get together for NAFC members(see prior post's). It is at Jordanelle hailstone day use area and you are sure welcome to attend. I did not have to much response about it and the folks who did plan on coming have had stuff come up. I am still planning on attending to see if anyone else does show. Its going to be a simple affair, bassically bring something to share with the group.

Anyway I would definatly be interested in tagging along some time. I don't really have suitable gear for musky but I am working on getting some. I could sure handle some smallies and cats. shoot me an email and we can keep in touch and hopefully get something together. brian.petersen@imail.org
