No I haven't or know anyone who has. There are some here at the lake I work at (I'm a park ranger) they average around 6-8" or so but have seen some bigger caught over the years even a few citations. As far as the lake goes there have been some upper teen to 20+ lb catfish caught this year, lg. mouth bass ranging 20-24" this fall/winter, crappie average 6-9" and we have northern pike of decent size but the DGIF quit stocking them they say poor return?. |

Hi all! Lifer here from 1991. Just moved to Roanoke, VA from near Allentown PA. I would love to hear about some of the fishing in the area. I am reading a lot about Smith Mountain Lake. I fish for all species and being on the water is reward enough for me. Catching fish is a bonus! (I usually do ;-) I do not currently have a boat but we will be in the market over the winter. I do some catch and release but prefer to eat what I catch. Looking forward to hearing from all of you. Looks like quite a few PA people here. Beutiful area! Looking forward to exploring some new fishing grounds! Bill |

Howdy fellow Virginnians, I grew up in Roanoke, VA and fished alot on the Roanoke, James and Shenandoah Rivers. Did alot of trout fishing too over in Botatot county. My father still has a place on Smith Mountain Lake where he's been fishing the lake since they flooded it. I was also in Quantico, VA while in the Marine Corp. and put a few hours on the Potomac that ran along the base. Good for catfish'n, crappie fishing and even some stripers during that magical spawn time. I'm now in upstate NY, but visit atleast once a year and still get out on her waters. Just saying howdy ya'll. Leave your ego on the water!

Just want to check in. I'm a lifemember from Norfolk. Been living here for about 12 years.
I've been fishing with my buddy for about 5 years now.
We seem to have the best luck out at the Suffolk Lakes - mostly Western Branch and Lake Prince. We usualy go on Sundays, as many times as we can, weather premitting!!!
We've gotten lots of Va. Citations out of these lakes (27 last season). Hope to see ya'll out on the lakes! |

Hey all.....just had an idea......i'm not sure exactly how widespread the northern snakhead is throughout virginia.........but whay if we wll had a snakehead tournament?? we wouldn't have to get together, just fish for them in you area if they are there......or if not go find them.........weigh it, measure it, and take a picture........this would not be a catch and release tournament..... the vdgif wants them removed from our waters........and from what i'm told they are pretty tasty anyway.......let me know what you think....talk to you later

I read/saw on the VGDIF website was they decided not to eradicate them b/c they were too prolific. They just want to try to turn them into a "gamefish" in the northern waters. I haven't seen any around here but after watching some youtube videos of them feeding I'm all for getting rid of them. They waste what they kill and very rarely finish off a half eaten fish. There's some videos of one vs a bass and it just rips the bass in half and leaves it alive floating unable to swim. That's wasteful IMHo. I guess they're good eating.
Tight lines and Best fishes! |

Hi everyone, I'm a new life member since 05/08 and lived in virginia since 04. I live on the eastern shore and do alot of fresh water fishing. The problem is not many fresh water spots here on the shore. Sure there are alot of ponds around here but very hard to get in because of the land owners dont want anyone on them, past experiences of fishermen. Nothing we can do about that. I'm just looking for go places on the shore to fish out of my canoe fresh water perferably. I do fish salt water, but I love fresh water. Nothing like a big bass on ultra light gear. I know of about 5 ponds to fish on right now but would like more of an option. I was thinking about putting an ad in the local paper what kind of advice can I get. That and finding the land owner is like finding a needle in a hay stack.................lmao thanks for the advice and good fishing to you all................ Chuck PS.... add me to the list please, thanks |

Greetings & Salutations Fellow Virginians from just another F N G (Fishing club New Guy). . . I recently purchased some property on John's Creek in Craig County just North of Blacksburg/VaTech near the WV border. It's strictly catch & release - stocked twice a year with rainbows, browns & brooks with enforced private access. I've already discovered a couple of "honey holes" with some really, really nice rainbows . . . I've always wanted to give fly fishing a try & now I have no excuse to see whether or not "an ol' dog can learn a new trick?". . . Tejano - that's Tay-hah'-no - just in case you don't savvy Tex-Mex . . . Yeah, I'm a dis-placed native Texican! |

I am currently living in Roanoke but will be moving in a couple of months to Northern Virginia. I grew up on the bay but I fish where I land. I am a Virginia Expert and Master Angler in both fresh and salt water. |

Hello all!!! Been a life member for about 4 years or so now. I live in Martinsville, Va. I love to just fish, be it for Largemouth, Smallmouth, Stripers, Big Catfish, Walleye, Crappie, or Trout; I just absolutely LOVE to be on the water. I look forward to talking to my fellow Virginians and Fish enthusiasts alike! |

Hello to all my fellow residents in the Old Dominion. I was born and raised in Philadelphia Pa., resided in Southern New Jersey for about 10 years until my job moved me down here to Central Virginia/Richmond area. I mostly fish off my kayak, but enjoy time on my jon boat or just along a bank somewhere Though I miss all the great freshwater and abundant saltwater coastline oppurtunities of NJ, I have found some nice spots to frequent here in Virginia. The Swift Creek Reservoir, Briery Creek, Sandy River Reservoir, Carvins Cove, the Chickahominy River and a few other small spots. I am going to be hitting the James real soon. I still make a trip or two up north to catch some Black Drum in May and June and some Striped Bass in the fall. Anybody close to any of these spots? Dan" Stealth" Doc |

Howdy fisherMEN! I'm a soldier originally from Florida but stationed up here at Ft Belvoir. Love to fish for bass, smallies, bream and crappie, but I here the rockfish up here are good too at times. trying my best to figure out this Potomac River. hit me up if you're close and let's wet a line!
