Hi all, the Chippewa Flowage's walleye fishery has seen a decline in the number of walleyes present. The resorts are starting to hold catch em' and eat em' events to try and kill off some of the largemouth bass, saying that large populations of largemouth bass cannot coexist with the walleyes. So what do you people think of the idea that largemouth bass are a contributor to the declines of the walleye population?

That's the DNR's theory, and the resorts are just following their advice. Nothing is being said about the tribes spring spearing of walleyes maybe being part of the problem... The more they (DNR) tinker with stuff, the more they screw it up.

I have read some real horror stories about the tribes abusing their treaty rights and wasting fish, not just on the Chip but across northern Wi. and all over Mn. Seems we have taught them the white man's way all too well. Tom

Yea the fact that the tribes are allowed to spear walleyes is horrible. The biggest problem is that a judge granted rights to the indians to spear walleyes. However I do see some sense in the DNRs theory, because largemouth bass eat alot of the walleye fry supposedly, since they eat almost everything. I believe that the only way to truly stop the spearing is to take the indians to court and see why they need to spear the walleyes and they'll come up with the excuse that it's their tradition to kill fish and give them no chance at escape. Heck, in Ontario, there are lots of indians, but the Ministry of Natural Resources made it illegal to spear walleyes. So if Canada could do it, then we can do it.

Spearing is not the real problem, the netting is. There is not much that can be done about it as these rights were given to the tribes in treaties. The government has made a mockery of many of these treaties, and now good or bad I think it is time to either honor them or negotiate in good faith with the tribes (something that historically has been sadly lacking). Remember that when it comes to the tribes, we are the newcomers here. Tom

I've been told that judge just happens to be part Indian.

Here is another brilliant ruling by the same judge  Barbara Crabb

    National Day of Prayer

Judge Crabb ruled on April 15, 2010 that the "National Day of Prayer", which was established by Congress in 1952, was unconstitutional. The Madison, Wisconsin based Freedom from Religion Foundation filed the lawsuit against both the Obama and Bush administrations in order to block the Presidents from making an annual proclamation customary of the event. The decision will not affect President Barack Obama from making a proclamation for the 2010 National Day of Prayer.

Well, thats the problem with bias. The government officials are biased to do what they want, whether it is good or bad for us. However, I have read that the indians are contributing enough money to the DNR to stock about 500,000 walleye fingerlings per year.
