I just completed browsing the forum like I usually do before I decide to post anything.  As far as speed goes, it seems to be just a bit faster, not overly significant.  I link with DSL with a 1.5M bit rate.  This may be why I don't see a huge difference.  I do not wait very long for pages to load anyway.

    Hi All,

It's come to my attention that somehow the other thread has become corrupted, and you haven't been able to see my last 2 posts, so I am starting a new one.

    Thanks!

Sorry, this one is a couple days old.  I won't re-post all the ones that you guys couldn't see, just the few that are still relevant.

    Hi All,

Just an update on the speed issue… we brought in a consultant to take a look at the new server set up, and he made some suggestions.  As some of you have no doubt noticed, the site was down in the early morning hours a couple times this week, and there may be a few more times its down between now and next week as well when we hope to have all the speed issues resolved.

Its actually not a server capacity issue as it may seem.  What the issue is, is as a club, we have several databases that have to talk to the website.  Typically a website only needs to feed on usernames and passwords.  But we have much more member data to communicate with to the site.  Specifically we have 3 large databases, and its supposed to feed all on the same server, which we did.  However, because they are all trying to pull data in the same location, they start bouncing in to each other, and spiking the CPU, causing the server to tax out at maximum capacity.

What we are doing (at the suggestion of the consultant) is segmenting the one large server in to 3, so each database can get the info it needs within its own home so to speak.  This will allow it to communicate with all the databases, but not allow it to bounce in to each other, and bonking out the server.  Hope this makes sense.

We are also working on updating the software to include the smiley’s (which we know pleases about half of you, and is dreadful to the other half) so that one is a lose-lose for us.  That update also includes a “jump to last post” option, as well as a few other things, but those seem to be the biggest requests.  We want to get the speed adjustments done first before taxing the servers any harder with an update to the software, and we still have testing to do of that one on the live server before rolling it out.

    Alright, enough boring you.

    Thanks all!

    Hi All,

Brief update:  We made some significant changes to the server configuration, and so far, it seems to have drastically improved the speed.  I would like to know if any of you are noticing the same thing?  Is it faster?  Slower?  About the same?

          Thanks All!

On another topic. I would really like to see an expanded member store section also.  I don't see anywhere that I can purchase hats, t-shirts, etc.  except for the flyer I got in the sign up packet and with the books.

I'm on cable internet and I now don't have any speed issues.  Bravo

Keep up the good improvements. I'm looking forward to more improvements, especially the chat room.

    A couple ideas,

Limit the number of post per page for each thread to around 20. The index for each section seem to come up pretty fast but the threads don`t. (they are better than they were) Seems like avatars, siggies, pics, and whatever else has to load for each page. Less post per page should open faster, 20 post per page should be more than enough to keep up with what is going on.

This one you will have to come with me and do. I will not be able to explaine it well but you should see it. This will get worse as time goes by and some threads get very long.

Lets go down to the mics section,  click on the good morning thread. Click on whatever the last page is, go to the last post and click respond. Here is the problem. If you look in the bottom left corner of your screen you will see "*.* images loading". I got 144 this morning. I usually press the stop button at this point and in a minute or so i can post. It would probabley take me a half hour to load all them images. Once you have the reply box up and ready to take info, scroll down. Anytime you respond to a post it reloads the WHOLE thread afterwards. If this site last, some of these threads are going to get very long, way to long for that to continue. Don`t know what kind of options you have here but the last 5 or 10 post is enough, and none would be a better option than all reloading.

The site was running a lot faster, threads were coming up way faster than they use to, till I tried to open this tread(I had to hit the refresh button because the site froze).  I have seen a definent improvement, I hope that the improvements continue.

Just to add to my earlier post,  I have found that when I click to open a topic and it stalls, if I hit the refresh button the page opens right up.

I have seen no significant speed improvements. I access from home on DSL, and from work on a T1. I don't guess it will matter for me. I am guessing the lag time that I have is probably my firewall on my router and my CPU.

    It is slow.
My system is very fast but your forum is very slow.

I believe it is how you have your systems resources allocated. Get your admins to fix the issue and hope that you are not running this on a windows server.

    Good luck

Well it's had it's ups and downs and the past 10 days or so I've been on quite a bit. It has been 90% very good with only a time or two that it was slow but no worse on my DSL than dial-up speed. Keep up the good work because there are still lots of issues with the forms. One of the big ones is a member that was removed some time ago is able to send PM's. His handle on here is vttroller he sent me 2 very nasty ones over the weekend and had been send out to just about everyone that posted on the Meet thread for the NE MEET at Lake George and Lake Champain. I and others have sent copies of these PM to the club but have NOT heard a word back yet. Any thing you can do on this NEW issue would greatly be appresated.

    Thanks

Hi, I'm a new member.  I have been watching your TV show for some time now.  I need some help with setting up my account profile.  For the avatar URL and the image URL I copied a link from a photo from my facebook site.  But that doesn't seem to work.  Also in my signature I put in my web site address www.peterspirito.com but it did not come up as a link.  Thanks.

Just to let you know, I spent the last hour typing my journal in the Pa forum.  When I hit the "post" button the screen went to somewhere I have not been and I was loged out!  After loging back in and going back to my post, I discovered all my work was gone!  Is this how we fix this site?  You won't see my journals on this site any more.  I am assuming that the web master doesn't want to see my journal writings on this site...

Well LBT, lets see how this flies. On 12/17/07 The mang. posted this......

Last post button is being worked on, as is a notification (like having a logo change colors) to let you know when there is a new post since your last visit.  Its part of a larger upgrade, so I don’t have a definitive time frame for it, but it should be soon.

Today they recieved another request from me to get it done. Thats almost two months after they started working on it. Sooooooooo i ask every member that reads this to go do the same. Maybe if we all get on them together, who knows, you can only try.

It is a shame what you have done to so many good people. If you ever do take the time to make this place work right there will be no members left. I became a life member in 98, didn`t even know of the BB. In the last couple years it has become the best part of being a member, YES even better than the mag. I like many others am very disappointed and ashamed to be part of the nafc today. This board is why. Five months and it still don`t work right. Well, some folks mentioned a while back you where doing this to get rid of the old timers. If thats true you lost another today. I conceed

Everything is working OK and is pretty "spiffy" as far as I'm concerned, except for one thing. Can you somehow put a limit on the size of the avatars? Some of these avatars are so big it makes it hard to read the posts.

    Thanks,

    Ray

The speed of the site is slightly better, but still slower than any other site I visit.

On another note...  How about making a size limit on avatars and signitures so we don't have to scroll right to read posts.  A size limit would make the forum more uniform and easier to read.  More and more people are posting full size pictures for their avatars.  A size limit would help to save space on the server as well.

    Hi All,

A brief update: We are working on the upgrade to the forums, we have it up in test on one of our other sites, here are some screen shots:

New Posts Since Last Visit Alert:

In addition to these changes, search is getting a drastic overhaul, the ratings system will be completely new, and Private Messages will be able to maintain the formatting with separated paragraphs, bold text, etc.

We are still in testing on the other site, and once we finish the ratings system, and work out any issues, we will start moving it live.  I will keep you posted as we get closer, and may ask for a few volunteers to test the forum features.

                  Thanks all!

    Hi All,

One other note, we can not currently turn off the "Post Anonymous" function, and to be honest, it would do little good because those who use it could (and do) just use the "Registered Guest" function, creating a second alias to post instead.  However, those posters are easily identified, and I have asked them to no longer use those other aliases or the anonymous posting, or I would ban their IP's.  (UPDATE: One has been banned now "picwic" and his other aliases)

Please remember this is a freindly community, everyone is here because they have similar interests and values, and we ask that you treat eachother with respect.  For most, it goes without saying, for others, it sometimes needs to be reminded.

    Thanks Everyone!

For over a year this has been the slowest website I've had the misfortune of dealing with.  Here are some ideas.  Chad Cox, fire him.  He told me things would be different.  If he meant different from other websites in that this one doesn't work, then he freaking hit it out of the park.  Nancy Evensen, fire her, she was in on the conversation with Chad Cox.

Tell Robert Pittman that his club reminds me of the days with dial up, except it's ten years later and everything else is much faster.

Make the site work with both firefox and explorer.  It doesn't really work with any of my computers.

You need to do a better job of weeding out the old posts that you are recovering from the old site. We don't need to see a post that someone had a boat for sale in 2007. If they still have it they will repost.

Also, could we please have a button that is enabled for the thread starter, and administrator only to lock or delete a thread when it had done its duty. It would save you server space and the site would load quicker if we could get rid of some old nonsense posts.

    Hi fellow fishermen

I have noticed by keeping my minnows in a white bucket with an airator that the minnows turn a brilliant color, either white or silver and has increased my walleye catch. Most of us in PA trap our own bait and have a spring to put them in. However, even bought bait will "color up"after a 24hr.period in a white 5 gallon bucket. Hope this tidbit of information will increase your catch's also. Be safe
