I normally fish Lake Pleasant north of Phoenix Az. on weekends. Large speed boats tear up the surface , sending wakes that rebound off of the rocky , and/or cliffy shorelines making the surface a multi directional chop that can only be crawled over. I fish creek arms , coves , or go up river (no wake zones ) to avoid speed boaters . Of course 100 gallon per hour speed boaters are quite a bit less present now with the price of gas what it is . I also fish overnight and the lake gets nice and calm after dark.       Happy fishing.

This is the main reason I always spend the midday at the lake setting in the shade and keeping cool with a cold brew or two.  I spend the more productive hours (early a.m. & late p.m. and evening} on the lake fishing.  That way the recreational boaters & skiers don't have to be aware of where I am on the lake & I don't get distracted by the big wakes and noise from them.

Same here , I go either early am or late evening . I fish on Lake Murray which is a very big lake in SC but recreational boaters are rarely out at these times , almost never . I prefer the night trips over anything though . I'll get out about an hour before sundown and stay out until 3 or 4 in the morning . I find the fishing is more productive and alot less boats on the water .

There are SOME waters where the fishing actually gets better with some boat traffic...but for the most part, fishing generally does shut down with a lot of traffic, and a person has only these options (MOST already mentioned)...

    1. Fish EARLY morning. If you can, launch a few minutes before 1st light.

    2. Fish evening. MOST of those folks will be drinking somewhere at that point...HOPEFULLY not on the water.

    3. Fish at night...prepare for bugs and have good lights.

    4. Find spots like underwater islands, creek arms and coves that the pleasurecraft HAVE to avoid.

    5. Fish the middle of the week when everyone else is at work.

    6. Find other waters in the area that may not be so crowded.

I can feel your pain !! My son and I used to try and fish inland lakes here in Ohio and found the only way was to be there at daylight and leave at 10:00. Finally gave up , we've been running Walleye charters on Lake Erie for the past 25 years. There is some decent fishing in our inland lakes but it's frustrating.  Dawn to 10, that was our best bet. Good luck,Capt Vern
