Last summer I was up north fishing for trout. I was using a two-piece semi ultra lite rod, with 3 pound maxima. I was fishing from shore on a rock that was about 3 feet higher than the water level. Directly in front of me there was about five feet of water with a dock running paralell to the shore. the dock was about 10 or 12 feet wide. I saw a fish boil on the other side of the dock, so Icasted over the dock, I danced my 1/32 ounce black & white trout teaser as far as i could before i had to give it a sharp, uphill type of tug to get it up & over the dock, thus clearing the obstacle. No problem on the first two casts. On the third cast, the hook snagged imperfectly into the corner of the dock. Without access to the dock, i first tried a series of subtle jerks, proggressively getting not so subtle. So what i did was, i held my rod as high as i could, with the line taught, then pulled the two-piece rod apart, & let the end of my rod slide down the line. It crashed into the lure, & knocked it free. With the hook of my trout teaser now secured around the tip guide, it was easy to retrieve the end of my rod. Of course nobody was watching.

Cool!  That was a neat trick!  I can see how it could work...even though it could also fail the next time you tryed it

Well, that is what a plug knocker does, however, had your line broken, you could have lost the tip section of your rod.
