I would say start with your lightest tackle and modest size lures and baits. Cover scents are worth a try as sunblock and insect repellent are turn off for fish. Make sure your hands are free of stuff like that. Don't just jump into every new, sure fire thing that comes along, pick a few things and learn to do them well (casting is very important). Talk to people, at the body of water which you are fishing, at a tackle shop or?
There is tons of information available, magazines, books and so forth. You already get one. it you have fished for other species, there may be some techniques which cross over (desd bait for cats might not be one of them).
Until you get some experience, it is VERY easy to carry so much tackle that it interfers with the fishing. Have experienced that one.
Last but certainly not least, consider hiring a guide for a trip or two, a good guide can teach a lot in a short period of time.
Just a start, others are better than I, there are some good links availabe on many of the threads, they are worth a try also.
