I was on a trip earlier this year, and I "fished" my way from TN to Ohio, and then back. On the way back, a weird thing happened to me at one particular fishing spot.
I had stopped at Charles Mills Lake in Ohio (right outside of Mansfield). The water was murky, but I had decided to fish for a while anyway. I was casting spinners, minnows, different crankbaits, all kinds of stuff. Nothing. The on one cast, I got hung up. I pulled for a while, changed direction, etc, and it finally gave and started coming with me. I get reeled most of the way in and I saw I was tangled in someone's line that had obviously been broken and sitting out there for a while, all covered with algae and scum.
Well, since my lure was all tangled in it, I did the obvious thing and continued to pull it in so I could get my lure free. I finally grabbed my lure and set my pole down. I was not having any luck freeing my lure so I decided to go ahead and pull in the rest of the old line. I pulle for a little bit, it was completely free by that time, and all of the sudden it stopped. I thought I was snagged again. So I started to pull harder. It came with me and a fish jumped out of the water! I found that I had actually caught a fish with whatever lure was at the end of that old broken line while I was pulling it in! So I continued to pull the line towards me and the fish fought me the whole way, it was maybe 20 yards out when he had first hit. I got it to the bank, and it was a real nice sized Smallmouth Buffalo! I did not have anything to measure him with, but he was about as long as my forearm/hand so that is about 15 inches. I was amazed!
The other odd part...at the end of the other line was nothing but a couple sinkers and a hook. Not even a lure! Glad I decided to go ahead and fish there!
