I was introduced to bass fishing after I moved to Arizona in 1980. I Finally boat a small boat  and started fishing fairly often. I did not have any good equipment so I decided to finally buy a good rod & reel. I spent around $ 200.00 and went to lake Pleasant - just north of Phoenix. I launched my boat and went to a point I wanted to fish. I had not put any line on the new reel yet, so I proceeded to do so. After filling the spool I tied on a lure and through out a cast to make sure everything functioned OK.  I line came out freely and I was ready to fish.  The wind was blowing about about 15-20 and had blown me quite a ways from shore, I decided it was too far to troll back to the point, so I fired the big motor. As soon as I hit the key, my new rod and reel got sucked over board. Obviously I forgot to reel up the line after I tested the reel with my One & Only Cast. So there I sat, in 50 feet of water. No I did not get my new rod and reel back, and over the years It is not the only one I have lost to the depths.  The good news is. My equipment has been upgraded over the years as well as my skills.  All Just part of the Learning Curve.
