it was memorial day weekend, and me and a large group of friends/family decided it was a good time to plana camping trip on the ol miss. I've been fishing the river around Alma, Wi as long as I can remember, and its always been one of my favorite fisheries. now, my best fishing buddy came up with us....his first time one the sippi! and it was a memorable trip! now i told you i fish the river in Alma, but this time we were out from la crosse. I didnt know this part of the river very well, but if you know the miss, you can figure it out easy enough. it also didnt hurt to have one of the most knowledgable fisherman i know with us...especially cause he just graduated from UWL and spent the past four years learning that section of the river...anyways...we get out friday night and pick our camping spot....right below a prime wing dam!!!
so the first night, while everyone else is drinking and having fun at camp, me and my pal walk down to the dam. his first cast lands him his first mississippi eye! only about 17", but still, a good start. few minutes later i land an eye. then we decide maybe we should go back to camp and be social. so the next morning, we go back to the wing dam. it was an eerily foggy morning on the miss. foggier than the usual foggy mornings. but the odd weather didnt detract from our fishing. we landed so many smallies, or "mud-carp" as some guys call em up there
...haha, anyways. after a few hours the bite slowed and we went to camp to drink. we came back around 2pm, and continued to catch smallies consistently. the bite slowed again, so we went to drink some more! nightfall comes, and we get a few more eyes. then retire early so we can get up with the sun again. the next day we took the boat up river and found some nice crappies. out of a glorious crappie hole that I'll never forget! then we decided to fish from the banks under the wing dam again for the night. but we decided to change the pace a little. instead of throwin out fatties, we tossed cut bait. within 10 minutes of tossin out cut mooneye (which we caught on nightcrwlers) we hooked into somthing huge. after a long fight, it got tangled in rocks or logs or somthing and we lost it. but after this quick success, we threw all our lines out with cut bait. it was a phenomenal night. i personally didnt land a fish that night, but my buddy (who just popped his sippi cherry) caught plenty to keep things exciting! between some 20 pound flat heads, and the 48" dinosaur of a gar he landed, it was a fun night! the next and last day...we sleep in. haha, but afterwards make it out for another good afternoon of fishing. this time we went into the sloughs. my bud catches his biggest walleye ever 24.5", and i catch some very nice 13"+ crappies, as well as a slew of small gar, and a pike or two. returning to camp, we were treated to my other buddies camping fish fry abilities. between the crappies, cats, and walters...it was one of the best meals Ive eatin on an island on the mississippi.
All in all, a great summer trip, one which will be repeated next year! and a GREAT first experience for my buddy on the greatest river ever!
