My husband and I , thought that we would go house boating with my family up by Lake Temagame, Ontario. It was in the beginning of September. All of the kids were back to school. We had the lake all to ourselves. I love fishing, but am truly awful at it. I cannot tie a lure to save my life. Don't know what the heck to put onto the hook. I cannot even touch a worm or minnow without the "girlish screaming" , let alone taking the fish off the hook, once I caught one. You get the idea. Well, early in the afternoon, I decided to practice my "fishing skills" while everyone was taking a nap on the house boats. I thought that since I was alone, I could not embarrass myself, as I often do. This area has a lot of rocks and is very easy to snag and lose your bait. This I am very good at though. Without knowing it I am casting into the perfect area for bass. (I read your articles after the fact.) As soon as I cast out, I get a bite. Of course I start screaming," I got a fish, I got a fish!" I wake everyone up, they come running to the shore that I was fishing from, with rods and reels in hand. Well, I reel in what I am thinking must be this massive fish. For me, this fish was so hard to bring in, " such a fighter, must feed 4 people", so I thought. Well, in comes this 4 pound bass, I'm kind of surprised such a small fish could fight so much. Hmmm... what to do now? I'm not touching that thing! I look over my shoulder and see a thorn bush behind me. Good idea. So I flung the fish, over head, into the thorn bush. The spectators, my family, see this beautiful bass go from the waters surface, through the air, then into the thorn bush. I let my brother in law untangle the poor thing, all the while, I am still screaming, "Kill it! Kill it!" I repeated this successful technique the rest of the afternoon. Of course the spectators held a careful distance from me, fearful of the dreaded flying bass.

Hahaha I agree 100% You need to get your hands dirty a little bit. My wife is not as bad as you describe yourself to be, but she still has a lot of trouble touching fish. She can take out her own worms and bait her own hook with em, but she cant touch fish yet. I did get her to once when she caught a largemouth and got one of the funniest fish pictures I have to date. But she loves to fish and is getting better. So yes, try it. You might get used to it and even start liking it. |

I know, I know. Very embarrassing to expose my fears like that. Since when did that little girl who loved to play with worms, bugs, frogs and anything messy, turn into this girly fisherman? Seems like 2 different people now. If you guys only knew what I did for a living, you'd be shaking your heads with wonder. On our last fishing trip, my husband and I went to Lake Cumberland, rented a houseboat. I was DETERMINED to touch a worm and bait the darn hook. I winced, I screamed. (Think I screamed all of the fish into the next county.Heck, they probably took a land route.) My poor husband took over, probably fearing worm atrocities I might inflict. II promise to keep trying. |

OK Guys, Have a great idea here.Well in this rookie's brain it seems like a good idea. You know how in surgery, when a baby gets circumsized, they strap the baby into a plastic molded papoose. It prevents the baby from moving, during the procedure. Could such a device be invented to put the fish or worm into, so that I could bait the darned thing? Wouldn't that be cool? I can feel your heads shaking in disbelief all the way to Canada. No more dumb ideas, promise. All right, this weekend, my sister and I are going fishing, just along the river. My husband has to work, so maybe this is a good time to try again. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks so much for the support. Boy do I need it. I'll bring the camera. Hopefully, my sister won't be laughing too much to take a shot. Thanks again. You have to tell me how your wife got over this phobia. Any pointers? PS. Already thought of practicing in the back yard with some "practice worms." I live in a sub-division, so all of the yelling and screaming would only alert the police. |
