I just made my first crank bait out of balsa. What is the best type of paint to use? Should I use acrylic, oil, vinyl, or some other type.

I was wondering the same thing.  I bought some plastic plugs but have not painted them yet.  What to do.  I have painted jig heads and found that model pains work well.  They may need some touch up if used around lots of rocks but lots of colors to choose from.

    Hey, guys, how's it going?

Gander Mountain in Kenosha WI has "lure paint," & I believe Bass Pro might carry it, too (they've got EVERYthing else).  You can also try Jann's Netcraft ( http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/fishin...le/ ) for lure paint.  But I wouldn't try model paints on lures again.  I tried it a number of years ago, & it didn't last at all.  I wound up giving the plugs I wanted to paint to a buddy, who painted them for me with something (I don't know what) that worked just fine.  If I remember right, I think he used marine-grade polyurethane on them after he painted them, too.

Search these Forum pages as well.  There are a number of your fellow Club members that make their own lures (Turnip is one), & you can PM them & ask them where they get their paint, or what to use that'll be a suitable substitute for lure paint.

There are also a number of guys on the ULF website ( http://www.ultralitefishing.com/php...5da ) who make their own lures as well, & those lures came out looking real nice!  Register (it's free), & PM them about what they use.

When you're done with those lures, please post some pictures & let us know how they turned out.  If you get any big fish with those lures you're making, let us know that, too.  Best of luck, guys.

If I'm not fishing, I'm thinking about it. Keep the line fresh, the hooks sharp, and have fun fishing. God bless you. -Sonny, Life Member since 2002

I'll definately use some kind of clear coat after it's painted(probably a polyurithane). After all, the most that can happen is I'll have to make another one. Thanks for the info,I'll let you know how it turns out.
