Was out fishin a 10" worm again around some a sloping bank near a channel when a bass took it on the drop and started swimmin. I let her chew on it a while because i had been missing strikes all day because i had tried to set the hook before they had the head (and hook) in their mouth (sorry david wasnt usin ur trick Frowner<!--graemlin::(-->) when i felt it was time i reared back to set the hook and.... my new ten lb. line snapped! there was nothing there in the water for it to get caught on so either this bass had REALLy sharp teeth or it was a BIG hawg... i like the latter personaly Big Grin<!--graemlin::D--> even though it DID get away Mad<!--graemlin::mad:-->

hate that for ya buddy. Frowner<!--graemlin::(--> could ya tell where the line broke? at the bait or elsewhere? if i was you i'd take it back to wherever ya got it. (i'd say swap for powerpro if i thought you'd listen Razzer<!--graemlin::p-->) sometimes it just seems like you get a bad batch of line. it breaks like that and you think, oh well, just a fluke. then you take it out again the next time and the same blasted thing happens Mad<!--graemlin::mad:-->. like i said - sometimes just a bad batch. losin even one biggun bites. it'd be real bad if it happens again. if it broke down by the bait, it could have been a gar or a grinnel if ya got any in the lake. sorry guys i been away from my comp lately...its for a good reason!!! i been fishin alot lately. i went two nights ago and got 7, then i went today and got 6...biggest around 19"

but anyway! heres just about all the info i can give about that pond...i just coppied this right out of the PM i sent to paul:

heres the coordinates to the pond... if you have google earth or even if you dont you can go to google.com and go to maps and turn on satellite or hybrid and it the same thing. anyway here they are: 38°36'41.63"N 76°57'02.05"W.

its a pretty small place...probly not even an acre...maybe one acre. anyway, there are no boats allowed (i wish there were cuz it would be a perfect boat pond.) and around the shoreline on land are lots of weeds. then in the water there are alot of thick weeds. i mean very thick. its just like a mass of weeds...no way to get a lure thru it. you can see them from the satellite image they are so thick...the very dark areas are the weeds. the south west side is where the dam is and that is the deepest side. the lake is kinda a bowl shape and its deepest in the middle. the north west and north banks have huge mudflats that only have about 4" of water that lead out into the deeper water. there is a weedline about 3' wide at the edge of the flats and dropoff. dropoff is around the whole thing and is kinda steep cuz it goes from a few inches of water to several feet (maybe 8 or 9') im unaware of any kinds of structure that are in it. ill include an image of it that i drew over w/ a key of stuff that i know. im gonna go ahead and post this now and then edit it later becuase i dont want to loose this because my comp. is notorious for kicking me off when im making a post.

ok so heres the pond and i mapped out all the key stuff:

the two long things full of weeds that go north and east are feeder creeks....very unfishable territory. but anyway thats pretty much all the physical geography of the pond. the water is very dark...not "murky" as in mudddy, but "murky" as in very low visibility and dark water. i suppposed you could call it super-stained water.

i see a bunch of little greenish minnows darting about on the flats that are 1-2 inches long. idk what they are but they're in there. also there are bluegill and crappie in there. the predators are bass and pickerel. there are alot of bass in the 5+ range. i can go in my waders out on the mud flats because there is about 4" of mud w/ 4" of water ontop. underneath the loose mud is gravel. on the south east bank where the weeds are the heaviest is very sticky stuff and i sink into the weeds/mud when i go out there so i cant wade there. but i do wade out to the deepwater on the NE and NW sides. the SW side is the only side fishable from shore.

Hope all that helped you help me. if you need anything else i will try to answer it.

David, great detailed map.
So the pond has Pickerel, Bass, Crappie, Blue Gill & Green minnows in it anything else?

What is the food sourses around the pond? Example: Mudpuppys,Salamanders,Snakes,Dragonflys,Snails,Crawdads and so on.

Can you use Blue-Gill in your State?

Can you get your hands on some rubber Leechs, Black, Watermelon or Motor Oil Color?

{Slug O's}- got any of these or can you get some {A.K.A. Darter Baits} ?

Need some more feed back from you David and will work this out ok.

ok craig...thats what i like...straight up questions...heres some straight up answers!

there are also bullheads in there

im not sure of the food sources but i always see lots of dragonflies. i doubt there are salamanders and mudpuppies arent really in this area, there could very well be snakes because the location of this pond has lots of tall grass round the edges and woods close by. its also very marshy so yeap prolly snakes, do fish eat snails? never seen any. most likely crawfish in there too.

im not positive if you can use bluegill...i always have, but im gonna call DNR on monday to ask...im pretty darn sure you can tho.

i probly could get some leeches. Designer Lures makes some nice leeches and all of their baits are excellenty priced. i dont have any money rite now to buy them tho...but my birthday is in a couple a days so i'll get some money.

i do have a pack of slug-o's. they are 7" i think and they are very slender...i didnt realize they were so slender. i also have a pack of jerkshads in baby bass color (olive on top pearl sides and bottom w/ olive flakes). i also have these things i got a long time ago called glass shads which is a clear jerkbait type thing w/ this gold foil insert in the middle. they look neat. o and i have some lunker city fin-s.

hope all that helped you help me!! Big Grin<!--graemlin::D-->Big Grin<!--graemlin::D-->Big Grin<!--graemlin::D--> let me know if you need anymore info.

My pop and I decided to head out to a new pond for my birthday, and boy was I glad to see the size of the fish coming out of this lake. We only caught 7 bass, but they totaled about 21 pounds, for an average bass that is 3 pounds. I'd like to show you one that is shy of the 4 pound mark, its only 3 lbs 8 oz which I caught on a Berkely Powerbait 7" Pumpkinseed worm in very murky water.

And this one happened to set the biggest of the season being an 18.5" 4 pound 1 oz bass which I caught on the same lure.

All of the fish at this lake fought harder than any other bass I have caught. They dove under the boat, ran by the lily pads, and jumped. When my lure landed, I saw a huge wake head right towards it, the seconds later felt the huge fish. When it was netted and in the boat, I lifted his head out of the net by pulling up on the line, and he shook and snapped the line. I will definitely return to this pond, and maybe look for a close by IGFA weigh station just to be sure. BTW, the first fish you saw was on a mud flat, and the second was where lily pads met the land in about 18" of water.

BTW David, you mentioned that the water was stained and murky. Well for some reason here on Long Island even the normally clear lakes have low-visibility. All that has been working has been pumpkinseed color. We tried green pumpkin, watermelon, black, and pretty much everything, but they never produced strikes. You might want to look into Pumpkinseed. Good luck though.

hey guys. what better way to celebrate the 100th post here than with "the formula for lunker success" here, in my opinion anyway, is the closest thing i can give ya for consistently bein' able to bang the big 'uns.

big bass tackle + big bass locations + big bass times + "big bass attitude" = LUNKER SUCCESS!!!

with time i will try to break down these individually with ya as there really is quite a bit to each of these. i'm definitely no expert but am willin to share what i do know about each of these. hope y'all will do the same.
