My beloved Shimano spinning reels that I have had and used (exclusively) for almost 3 years recently passed away...(a big bass tore up my drag system) Now that was my first reel that I had ever fel in love with. Every other reel I bought had something wrong with it, and I only kept them as my 1st stringers for a week or so. (I guess I was very picky). Well, I have picked out a new Shimano/Bionic Blade combo from BPS I will be getting for my bday in a few weeks, but I had to get a temporary rodnreel, so I went to Walmart, and picked out a Mitchell combo. My original snake lures had got here today, so I wen tup to a local pond to try em out.

I only got in 2 casts. Every cast the line would unravel from the spool completly and wrap up eevry which-a-way. I will be taking it back ASAP.

    Anyone else think Mitchell sucks?

leeike is right about the cheap line. if you didn't change the line that came with the real it will do just that. that line has been on the real for at least a year and it is to heavy for my liking also, so the line has a lot of memory in it.

ibought a couple of the wal*mart combos when they had them on clearance. the first thing i did is change the line and then went fishing. they might not be my faverates, but i do like them.

I have found that some "cheaper" reels don't have the bells & whistles to keep from having this promblem. Also, line on the filler spool is on there a certain way & you have to "unwind" it, lay the filler spool down (flat sided) make a few wraps & if it starts jumping off usually you can flip the filler over & fix the promblem, or have your tackle shop spool your reel & don't worry about this promblem? hope he has fixed this problem by now lol... posted this 2 yrs. ago... Darrell

I have a Mitchell 300 and never had a problem with it,the only problem you are having could just be the line.

if you bought the reel with line on it,that is most likly the problem.

If you bought a pre-lined reel I would think it would just have a bunch of memory and be loopy, but you say your line is jumping off the reel.  That tends to happen when you put on new line without applying pressure to the line as you reel it on.  If you simply reel it on without applying pressure, its memory from the line spool will remain and it will want to jump back to that shape (normally larger than your average reel spool).  Next time you put line on, pinch it between your fingers hard about a foot or so up from the reel so that pressure is applied to the line as it is reeled onto the spool.  You'll find it will go on (and stay on) much more easily that way
