sounds like it may be running too rich or a possible firing problem. pull a spark plug out and examine it.

i would get like a clymers book and read about it or talk to a mechanic. if it is oil injected i am wondering if the mixture oil/gas is different at a lower rpm than at a higher rpm seems i read that somewhere.i will have to look at my book for my engine.

Thanks beatlespins, I heard that too,my friend and i looked at the injection system and it seems to be completely seald with no way to adjust? It makes sense cuz when i start it up after setting all week, it smokes like crazy for about a min.I have to have the engine tilted more than half way up about a mile down my creek cuz of depth, runs fine,,, than as soon as i enter lake erie and trim it straitit smokes, misses than i goose it and it runs like a new one. But man, you would think i just let out a smoke bomb!!! Im gonna try those sites rt8 recomended to see if i can get info, Hey thanx rt8, i realy appreciate you guys responding!!! This is realy a annoying problem,,, will let you know if i find the answer,,, jim

Is your oil injection still working. I've got a 90 Johnson 200 GT that has the injection system removed. I mix my own oil - a bottle per 12 gallons and change my plugs annually.

It smokes a little on ignition but that's it.

I have a '95 70hp Johnson w/oil injection and the shop I had it at this past fall recommended removing the injection system and just mix the gas 50:1 instead. Seems that the OMC system is not a very good one like the newer ones with an injection pump, and they do have their problems. Since I have an on-board 32gal tank I found that impractical becuse I'm never sure how much fuel is going in and can't add oil untill then. But if I had portable tanks I would have done it.
But YES, you can disconnect the injection and just use the 50:1 mix instead.

Get a 6gal tank w/50:1 mix and plug it in to see if indeed the injection system is a problem. Make sure you un-plug the oil line from the engine.

I suppose you'd have to disable the warning beeper or leave the oil tank in the boat full. But first check w/dealer and find out the best way to do it. Mine is a tiller and the beeper is in the bottom of tiller. Just disconnect a wire. Also, test your motor on a tank of 50:1 fuel first to make sure that was the problem. It sounds like it is but you never can be sure. If you can't get the answers you need in your area, let me know and I'll call my guy on ths end for you.
