First off, if you UNthaw it, you will be freezing it. You want to thaw it. That aside, I don't see why your cut bait idea wouldn't work.

My friends and I freeze gizzard shad for use as catfish bait. Works great. We soak the shad in VERY salty ice water for a few hours first. The salt helps toughen up the shad so it isn't mushy when you thaw it out. We use about 1/2 pound salt for every 2 gallons of ice water.

Also, check your local regulations, you mentioned using bass. In Oklahoma, you can't use large mouth for bait.

I like the " Salty Ice Water" idea, I also had a friend in San Diego who added garlic to his "brew". Definately agree on the "Gamefish" for bait reference, many states will hurt you financially for that.

before you use it check you fishing rules. most states have a law forbidding using gamefish as bait in any form. as far as i know bass is a gamefish in every state

You can speed this up by adding a can of cheap beer, the yeast works faster. just becarful don't cover the bucket pressure will build until your corn chum will be all over the garage,if the wife was to find it just sign the papers and get it over with.lol

My friend Jeff always has Bluegill in the freezer. We take it out the night before and it is cut before it's frozen. I do believe that a Cat sees food as food.

Yes, if you're making chum PLEASE drill a hole in the bucket lid I made that mistake once.... Chum's been setting since last summer, should be ripe by now

i never wouldve thought that adding salt to water would toughen the fish. but are they as tough as fresh or tougher.
