The whiskers are harmless, it's the spines on the dorsal and pectoral fins that can sting.

Never a dumb question. The other info you might want is the younger the catfish the sharper the spines are and wear down as the age. A small fiddler cat can fin you and I have had it go clean to the bone and hurt like heck. The fins are for their self defense when they are small and as the become an apex predator or get to the point that they don't have any natural enemies they wear down from being dragged across rocks and sand. If you look at the fish in my avitar I had hispectoral spine pressed right up against my chest and didn't even notice it at the time. |

Catfish have one thing in common with 'gators: everyone worries about the wrong part! Worry about the gators tail, not the mouth just like a catfishs' barbels(whiskers). Tom Fishin' fool in NE Illinois |

I keep a tube of Neosporin ointment in my tackle box. If you get "horned" by a catfish, apply a small amount of neosporin and it will quit hurting. Dave D.

Also the myth about poison is just that. The only poison about that is people who get tagged and don't clean there wounds properly(Me did it when I was 12). Uncleaned wounds can get infected due to the fish slime and other shore dirt. If you happen to get hit, rinse with clean water and like Dave said apply some Neosporin if you have it. NAFC Lifetime Club Member, BASS Member I think sting is the wrong answer. Catfish don't sting you. They have no stingers. They can stick the hell out of you due to their pronounced dorsal and pectoral fins. Most fish have sharp bones in their fins as a protection measure. Keeps 'em from getting swalled easy. I keep hydrogen peroxide on the boat for my livewells, so it's available to me for any cuts or punctures that need cleaning. Add 1 ounce of hydrogen peroxide to 7 gallons of water to keep bait fish or live fish oxygenated. Water is H2O, hydrogen peroxide is H2O2. The extra oxygen atom bonds to the water molecules and will keep your bait or fish oxygenated for many hours, even without a water pump or power oxygenators. Phoenix Arizona

B or B: Thanks, I have heard about using peroxide in a bucket or live well but wasn't sure of the concentration. At almost 900;1 a pint of peroxide will treat a lot of water with plenty left for the inevitable nicks and dings. Tom Fishin' fool in NE Illinois |

The next time one of you gets poked by a catfish fin or spine, rub the wound with that fish's belly. That will kill the sting when you get time wash the wound and apply first aid. Works for me. Quit catchin them little ones and you don't have to worry. |

I've never been cut by the whiskers (barbels I believe is the technical term). But I've been cut my the pectoral fins more than once. I've heard rumors that catfish can inject poison with their whiskers. I don't think any catfish species can, but I'm not sure. I'm sure the bacteria on the fins can do some damage though. |

I did a bit of research on this, and apparently some species of bullhead do have a mild venom on the dorsal and pectoral spines but as stated previously the bacteria is a bigger problem. Tom Fishin' fool in NE Illinois |

Catfish barbels are strictly a taste organ. They have absolutely no capability of harming you. The spines in the dorsal and pectoral fins are the danger. Phoenix Arizona

I can vouch that rubbing the wound on the fish works well to minimize your pain although I never heard anything about any particular part of the fish being better than another. The fish's slime is antibacterial, that is why is is so important to try to do as little damage to the slime layer as possible when handling a fish. Bass, The bait of Champions.
