    Way

    Go
    Scott!!!!!!!!

Getting your daughter into fly fishing with some decent equipment is a smart move. Check out Redington, St. Croix, Cabela's, March Brown, and other moderately price rods in your range. I've never met a fish that cared if it was caught with a hundred dollar rod or a five hundred dollar rod. Smiler<!--graemlin::)--> Just get the best you can afford without breaking the ole budget. Oh, by the way Scott, your daughter has a great DAD. Big Grin<!--graemlin::D-->

I introduced my daughter to flyfishing with my 8wt fly rod while fishing for trout. She really enjoyed it, even though she didn't catch one that day. However, she had one for about 10 minutes (nice one, I'm sure) before it finally broke the line. Now, I'm taking her out for lesson #2 tomorrow on an excellent local trout river (Kern). I'm really considering getting her a fly-rod for Xmas, but still don't have the knowledge to make a good choice. She's 13, stands 5'2". What wt, length and brand would you recommend? Please don't say Sage. My budget is very limited. I've even been searching Ebay for anything in my price range. But...I also don't want a cheapo, as I already have two of those ($29.99). Wow, they suck! Seriously, looking around $100 for a set-up. Tell me that's a little unrealistic, huh? So far her Xmas list looks like this: hunting knife, waterfowl hunting jacket and larger camo* shirts (lil' creep keeps outgrowing her clothes).

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll be heading to BPS during Thanksgiving on our way to San Diego. That'll give us a chance to handle some of their models. I mean, flyrods. Roll Eyes<!--graemlin::rolleyes:-->

Don't forget to check the catalog outlet store if they have one. I went to the BPS in Springfield MO today. Got a pair of chest waders (Red Head- Bone Dry Neoprean) for $45.00. Lucky they had one pair that fit me perfect. Smiler<!--graemlin::)-->
Oh! They wouldn't let me handle the models either. Big Grin<!--graemlin::D-->

ST. Croix rods are beautiful rods, and are of great quality. Plus, they are American Made! These are the only factory made rods I own, and I swear by these rods. These are the best thing after custom rods.

I have 4 St. Croixs, two which have landed HUNDREDs of salmon each, and are still going strong. My other two are for bass and trout, and handle beautifully!

I picked up an LLBean streamlight (with reel, line, leader and case) online for 150, couldnt be happier with it. medium action rod, it's pretty forgiving as far as casting goes. mine is a short (6'6") 3 wt...you might pick something a little more versitile (8' 5wt sound about right to anyone else?...depending on target fish of course)

An 8' 5wt if just dandy for trout...Though personally, I would get a 4wt, as its fun and challenging to play a big trout on one!

Most of the trout we target are between 8" and 12". Oh, there are those that are outside of those measurements, but have yet to see anything over 2#. Mostly stockers, of course. But, I know the rivers that we fish in hold scores of big rainbows in the 6# and 8# range. Just haven't found them, yet. Wink<!--graemlin:;)-->

I have used several brand name fly fishing gear.

Redington, St Croix, G Loomis, Cabelas, South Bend, Scientific Angler, Pluger...etc

If I only had one choice to get a beginer a fly rod for reasonable price, I would get a Cabela's Three Forks Combo: They are on sale now for less than $100....great quality...includes backing and fly line, I believe there is a CSR three forks combo for $114...WOW!!

The best part is Cabelas customer service is excellent and if you have any problems no questions refund available.

The Cabela's fly gear I use is great or just as good quality for a beginner out there, and the price can not be beat.

You can get a 5wt. St. Croix for 80 bucks...and they are one of the best in customer service too. I used have an old St. Croix that broke. It was out of production, and they shipped me a brand new one of one of their new series for no charge in less than 2 weeks!

Scot salmon slayer is very correct there I don't own a cabalas rod but my son dose.

NOW LET ME TELL YAH A STORY SAD BUT TRUE

before fathers day my son calls me up to inform me he bought his first fly rod.
The next day he takes it out and well as luck would have it he snags a tree on his back cast and proceeded with his forward cast SNAP the rod broke. Feeling all bumbed out he called me. I told him hey it's a cabalas brand bring it back and see what happens. sure enough they replaced it . well now its fathers day and he comes up to go fishing with me some how in the boat travel yep the rod broke well back to cabalas again . yep they replaced it again.
i don't no what the warenty is but the customer service is exalent and theres cabala stores all over . and they really are decent for the money. they may even let her take it out side and give it a try . some rods have different actions so if she could try it out there so much the better .
what one person likes may hinder another .

Trev, Perfect gift for Tim at Christmas time would be a case for his rod. As long as he can keep it out of the trees is shouldn't break. Big Grin<!--graemlin::D-->
I'm cheap so I made one of PVC pipe. Smiler<!--graemlin::)-->
