If you have a decent library in your area, start there.  A really good bookstore may have something.  Pick up one or two of the magazines dedicated to fly fishing and check in there for links.  Scroll down the page to some of the other posts and check some have good links, some links can lead to others, try tho one about looking for trout in riffles as an example.  Tackle stores?

Anyway, good luck and leaping fish.

I myself did this back in 1985 just by using a VHS tape and my son now 18 learned off a dvd.  There are several dvd's out there that show the basics and once you get out and practice some it isn't that hard to learn.  I did later on go to different fly fishing seminars to learn different types of casting.  There are numerous books and dvd's in most sporting good stores that teach you how to tie flies and give all different types of flies depending on the species of fish you plan to fish for.  I personally only fly fish for trout and am going to attend a fly fishing seminar in March in Colorado from some excellent fly fishermen.  Also look for any local fly fishing clubs in your area, most members are more than excited on helping another person learn to fly fish.  Good luck, it is a very enjoyable way to fish!

I haven't tyed for a long while so I'm pretty rusty.  When I get back up to speed later this year I wouldn't mind joining in on a flt swap.  I'll practice up on the "Simple Crayfish" and go from there.

    peg leg,

I just now saw this post, I see it is a few months old.  Did you ever find a book?

If not I have "the orvis fly fishing guide"  by tom rosenbauer.  It is a great instructional book.  For sale if interested.

Check out Amazon.com for fly fishing books. There are more books on fly fishing then you can imagine! Also you can read the reviews as posted by purchasers. They have a great selection. I buy most of my fly tying books from them as it is cheaper than through local dealers. Good Luck to you. JOHN C.TAYLOR--- Put your post in the Fly Swap thread as it will be seen by the tiers who swap!! Good luck to you--The fly swaps are a lot of fun!!------Bill J.

Forget the books for now, heres a website that will tell you everything that that you need to know & some that books dont. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/begin/101/ Remember that books can only give you insight on how to Fly Fish, the only way to learn is actually going out & doing it. I recommend that you find a park & start practicing your casting & techniques there. (Use only the Fly Line, no Leader or Flys needed) This should help to give you a plan & ideas on how to shoot line, this cannot teach you how to do cast's such as the "Roll," or "Spey," in which they need the water surface friction to load the rod. Also I would do this with a spare line, not the one that you plan on taking out on the water. I also encourage you to take a lesson or 2 if you have the money capabilities to do so. .."The best time to go Fly Fishing is anytime that you have a chance!"..
