ok Trev, went to Bass Pro today and purchased the convertible White River fly/spinning reel combo. the handle section is reversible so you can set up the rod either way. I'm gonna give this a shot.

it is a lot of fun i think you will enjoy it . you can catch fish by using  a drop back  method with out even  learning casting  granted its limiting but it can be done .
stand about knee deep in riffle area with a nymph just let out line and slowly move the rod  to the left then to the right  strip out a bit more line or take one step and repeat  fish the area thoroughly.

Folks it's not as hard as most think to learn how to fly fish, just do some reading and some practice and you'll be fine

I learned to fly fish when I was 15.  No one to show me how, no tapered lines or leaders, and no fancy gear.  I learned by watching others fish and making up my mind f I wanted dry fly or wet fly.  I still have that old cheap 3wt rod and some kind of cheap reel.  I get confused (some say easily) by all the need for tapered lines & leaders.  I have upgraded my equipment for bass & panfish.

My go to for trout is still the old stuff...Lou is correct when he said it is easier than you think.  step out into your back yard and start throwing!  Hey, if this dumb guy could figure it out at 15 so can you!  It's all in how bad ya want it...

A first rate instructional DVD is "Basic Fly Casting" with Doug Swisher from Scientific Anglers. I purchased my copy from Bass Pro Shops online catalog. This DVD makes learning fly casting easy and fun. Highly recommended.

another good idea is to see if there is a fly fishing club in your local area. If they plan outingg the chances are that there will be someone willing to help you out. I learned a fair amount from a local club and had fun too. Of course it may be a good Idea to have at least some basic casting skills before you go.

Best way I know is to get with someone who know what they are doing and has the patience to teach. Learned more in one basic class with a friend and 1 day on the water with him than I have with most of my reading on the subject. Lefty kreh has a book that is really good once you know a little bit.

jarpan, I would say that since you have been doing it for a few years that you can qualify to be in the real fly fisherman class. those sites that rod tosser posted are great sites. I particularly like fly anglers online and midcurrent. I also like hatches magazine and their site. I get useful emails from them on a regular basis. I like you have only been fly fishing for only a few years but have benefited from being able to reach out to the community.
