My first fish on a fly rod was a carp.  I must have broke off a dozen of them before I finally landed one of those powerful rascals.   I think fly fishing for carp is a challenge and more people are getting on board.

I tie this really ugly fly our local carp seem to like but the fly is so horrible looking  I never show it in public.  It's even been known to make little kids cry.

There was a book called "Carp on the Fly", a Flyfishing Guide written in 1997.  As carp often feed on insects, most of the flies they use are common trout and panfish offerings, including nymphs, dries and even streamers.  They also list a couple of unique ties, one for dandelion or thistle seed and one for cottonwood seed.  Seems one must often match the hatch for carp as exactly as for the pickiest of other fish.

Yeah I have a fly that looks like a shrimp and they hit it from time to time. one thing I have learned is that I use spider wire for my leader when I am Fly'n for Carp. cause I would say I have lost about 40.00 in fly's from them snapping my line. lol

I also use a woolly from time to time Light brown or dark green in color.

I would really like to see that fly your talking about.. Maybe have my friend to tie one like it if that's ok with you. it's hard for me to tie anymore the way my hands start to hurt anymore.

The cheapest version of that book is 70 bucks on amazon lol must be rare. http://www.amazon.com/Carp-Fly-Flyf...855&sr=1-1 13.13 out of amazon but outa stock wowy.  Me and a friend were throwing everything we had as carp jumped all around in a local resevoir. We have no luck getting them to hit anything although we see them sipping off the surface.  GRrrrrrr 10 carp doing a circle dance around our flies but nothing. What do i throw at them?

I really don't know what the point of fly fishing for carp is. You get the same affect from using spinning tackle.

?????????????????????????????????????? When is the last time you had a trout or bass run you into your backing, not just once, but a couple times during the course of a fight. Carp on an 8wt with 20lb leader is awesome. The power is unmatched, and believe me they get ill tempered when you set the hook. I stuck a 28" fat checker last week, the fight lasted for 25-30 minutes. Every time I got him close he would run me out again. 6 times!!!! into the backing we went. My problem with carp is if I hook a good one I'm to pooped to play anymore after just one.
I want to be the first man ever to fly fish a manatee! I promise I will catch and release.

I could see that it would be fun for monster fish (larger than normal). A real challenge!

if you really want to catch a lot of carp on the fly i suggest fishing in shallow cloudy water and pop a wooly bugger off the bottom.or if there are carp visable at about 10 feet or more below water level purchase some sinking  leaded leader and do the same.i also suggest finding some better knots to use on your flies and connecting your tippet and leader. i would prefer a 6 weight for carp.
