how small of flies can i cast with a 6 wt.

    I have a 6 wt. rod and i'm new to fly fishing. I got a fly tying kit and they are all size 12 and 10 flies can i cast these on my 6 wt. rod please reply thanks.

    I have cast smaller flies than that on an 8 wt. I have also cast larger. the first thing to do is get comfortable with flies you can cast and see (for topwater any) and then up or downsize lures as appropraite to the situation. tens and twelves will be OK many panfish and trout situations. You will eventually want to be able to go smaller for trout and larger for bass and other fish. Lots of good literature out there and lots of good links on this thread, just scroll down and enjoy.

    piemorgan: with a fly rod you are not casting the FLY you are casting the line so you could cast the smallest fly made and not have a problem with a 6wt rod. You will also be able to cast fairly large flys with the same rod. hope this helps ya some.

    the fly just goes along for the ride.   the tippet ( last section of a fly leader) helps turn the fly over
    most folks  use the rule of 4 divide the hook size buy 4 .
